Holes in sill….both sides…same location?

Featured Replies

I have been waxoyling the sills and subframe on my MK2 fl Octavia VRS today.

There is no visible corrosion on either sills they’re absolutely immaculate but there are two holes in each sill.

They’re about 5cm in from the front sill, the same shape and diameter.

Now looking at them, they look like corrosion but the metal is solid and there was no rust around them at all before I put on the waxoyl.

Is it corrosion or is there a bung missing or something?

The lines look too straight to be corrosion. Is it not just the end of the inner sill ?

I have circled the holes as they’re quite difficult to see on the photos.

my guess would be a drain hole for the box section?

I was thinking the same.

The only reason I have my doubts is because the hole is quite jagged. Not a perfect round circle.

I’ll let the waxoyl dry off and then try and get some better photos.

It looks like there is seam sealer inside the one hole.

It’s the weird shape that makes me think it’s not a drain hole but there is no corrosion on that sill at all.

Weird.

If its at the rear my old octavia was the same but mine had started to rust. I glued a rubber bung in each side to cover it up for an MOT in case they came back with weld a patch on it as the sills on mine are past it. Reckon its a drain hole but I know what you mean about the rough edges. Squirt a good load of waxoil in as far as you can.

This is at the front about 5-10cm in from the front box section. It’s definitely there on purpose. I think it’s covered in seam sealer on the other side as the hole is a lot smaller and you can peel it back.

How old was your Octy when it started to rust?

Good idea on the bung.

I can’t believe how immaculate the sills are on mine, apart from where some daft tyre centre has jacked it up.

Rear subframe has plenty of surface rust on it though.

Mine was an 08 plate. I got it when it was about 10 year old and it had a few bits of rust around the rear panel just before the rear wheels. I tried to keep on top of it but alas it was a bit down hill after that. Still lasted another 7 years but underneath became bad with bad sub frame corosion. Saying that it was only the last couple of years that holes started appearing in sills. Managed to cover them for a year but last year would have taken a lot of time and effort for MOT so bought a cheapish 12 plate. Its developing rust in exactly the same places (front wheel arch, rear numberplate and rear panels in front of rear wheels. but sills seem to be better painted. Did notice when changing timing belt that there is a lot of crap behind front wheel arch plastic that was causing corosion so removed both sides and gave a good clean pus waxoil. It depends what part of the country it comes from. Up in Inverness they use a lot of salt so cars tend to die much earlier no matter what you do. My sons 06 plate fabia mk1 came from I think somerset and has virtually no rust at all.
