Limp mode - unusual or to be expected? DSG oil too cold?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

2017 Diesel Superb (190/DSG). It's been an amazing car and I'm still holding off swapping it... but today, I had an issue.

Driving daughter to school, gentle 30/40 mph forest roads, 5.5 degrees, 15 minute drive. Drop off. On the return journey, 5 mins in, I come across a very slow moving car so drop the gearbox into SPORT mode (it's always in the custom setting which is a mix between NORMAL and ECO). 1 second after pressing the mode button, I hit the gas.... and it accelerates as normal but quickly backs off and the glow plug light starts to flash... and it lacks power (I now know that it is in limp mode). I got home, turned it all off, then on again, and it's back to normal (no limp mode).

I don't often use the SPORT mode.... and the car generally does 140 miles a day (2 x 70 mile motorway commutes). Driving to work tomorrow and I've got a friend there with a code reader who will take a look.

Could it be it was just too cold (the gearbox oil) and not happy with the request - ot is it pointless speculating until the code has been read?

Thanks

Si

Typo

I wouldn't associate a flashing glow plug lamp and engine limp mode to a gearbox fault

Wait and see if any codes are stored if any.

I'd have thought everything would be pretty much up to temperature after 15 minutes, even with fairly gentle driving.

Sounds to me like an over/underboost fault with the symptoms you describe.

You need to reed the fault codes.

The gearbox is well and truly capable of operating in much much colder conditions.

That should not b the cause of ur limp mode.

Usually when there is a gearbox fault going into limp mode, there is an error message that states it, at least it did on my MY2018

Hi all

Finally got round to having the codes read. See images...

My mate did suggest a message about it being 247 miles since an high oil warning (I think that's what he said).

He's reset it.

I have had the same issue 2 more times since I posted, both times within 10 mins of me starting (so cold).

Mate suggested changing the oil pressure valve...

Thanks for any advice!

1,000 fault free miles since the code was cleared and after a 70 mile motorway commute today, after a hard acceleration from some traffic lights (first hard acceleration since it was cleared), it went into limp mode again so definitely not a temperature (cold) related issue.

Think it's going to need a garage 😕
