Servicing costs

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just looking for some advice...

I have given in my '00 Octy 1.9tdi elegance for service (85K). The service is 150. Just had a phone call saying it also needs: a pollen filter ( should this part of the service?), a new set of pads on the back, diagonstics and a MAF.

The total the guy gave me was 320 inc vat. Question is, is this reasonable???

I think that I'm gonna have to buy a Haynes manual do some stuff my self, I have in the past change drive shafts, brake pads/disks, suspension and done normal services, but all on older cars e.g. 10+ years old.

The thing is that I don't always have the tools to hand to do the stuff and all these new cars have special spanners and the like :(, suppose if i buy then once and do the service every time then it's a good investment.

BTW the guy thats doing is very highly recommend and has had costumers going to him for over 15 years.

Do you think it worth me changing the oil & filters every 5K??

Thanks

satpal

If you're not sneezing in the car and dont have hay fever, dont bother with the pollen filter. Its a £5 part but takes a fair time to fit.

MAF is less than £70 and takes 5 mins to DIY fit.

Rear pads is a DIY job with a wind back tool (Halfords, £10)

Rear pads are easy, 30 mins to do.

Pollen filter, again, 30 mins tops - remove ns wiper and remove the cover that the spindle comes through, it's in there. You may need to remove both wiper arms. Take care not to snap the plastic trim that runs along the base of the windscreen (thats the hardest bit of the job).

As Phil says, MAF is dead easy and about £70. Takes max 10 mins.

5k for an oil and filter change? Nah, IIRC they were 10k intervals, not sure if variable was an option at that age.

Thanks for this. I think i'll defo post up here next time I need a service and find out what tools i'll need and buy them.

Thanks

* This may not be true.
