The engine stops after starting (Petrol RS 2.0) Tips are welcome

Featured Replies

My engine regularly stalls after starting. The local garage and the Skoda garage have already investigated this, but they haven't found the cause.

When I press the gas pedal I can keep it running, but it is not the solution. Also when I keep trying eventually the engine will stay on.

Here's what I know has already been done:

  • The software has been updated.

  • Start-stop has been disabled.

  • The spark plugs have been checked.

  • No errors in the logs.

The attached video shows what happens when the engine stalls when I put it in D. You can see the status flashing between D and D1.

I hope someone has a good idea what the problem might be.

Tips are welcome, my car is still in warrenty 🙂

Id lean on whoever is providing the warranty.

Just make sure you aren't stalling it yourself.

Eg, having the handbrake on and trying to drive off.

Maybe the brake switch is dicky and it engages the clutch because it thinks the brake is released.

Can you please give us more info.

Saying it stalls after starting is pretty open ended.

maybe describe EXACTLY what happens so we can have half a chance at figuring out the go

Does it do it when in P

What about in N

What about R

Is it only when you put it in Drive?

Is your foot on the brake?

What happens if you don't have your foot on the brake (and handbrake released of course)?

Sorry for the verry late reply, I have contacted the dealer and asked for further research.

Indeed it's his responsibility.

Does it do it when in P --> Yes also in de P and in de D, de blinking between D and D1 is only in D.

What about in N --> normally I only start in P, but can check what happens in N. Only it only happens occasionally.

What about R --> didn't tried yet

Is it only when you put it in Drive? No when I start, but rarely also when I stop at the traffic sign.

Is your foot on the brake? --> yes when starting but I release it when started. Then it stalls.

What happens if you don't have your foot on the brake (and handbrake released of course)? see above.

At the moment I asked the dealer what the next step will be from his side.

Will keep you posted.

I'm hoping from the help en experience in this forum I can speedup the research from the dealer.

It is not my intention to solve the problem, only to speedup and have less visits to the garage 🙂.

Are your door locks working normally?

Yes the are working fine.

Ow and also the battery was checked and was OK.

There's not a huge amount to go on which makes it likely quite a lot of suggestions are going to be dead ends!!

When you say no error codes. Were you running a full module can for example VCDS (full version) OBD eleven..... something else?

In the back of my mind I'm thinking DSG... But it is just a hunch!! Nothing more.

Even Skoda didn't read any error codes, the should have a full version I think 🤪

They'll run some dealer level diagnostics so yes, should of been all modules. But we haven't seen the results with our own eyes, also it possible something could have ben logged since.

If it is a dsg fault, they're not always guaranteed to show dtc even with clear mechanical faults. Sometimes, they do, but not for everything.

Possibly worth looking at some live data on the dsg like clutch pressure for example but you'd need some baselines to compare or some technical guidance.

Try some googling car stalling dsg faults etc. Golf gti, golf r, audia s3 etc all have a similar engine and transmission.

Is your 6sp or 7sp?

To look at live data is for me a bit hard. It is not my cup of tea.

Will google for your tips.

Mine is a 6P
