70mph drone

Featured Replies

Getting a drone from just under 70 to a “little” more, this is at around 2600 rpm in 6th, very annoying and does not happen at other speeds. This car a new to me so I suspect it may have a resonator delete or coded exhaust valves to open. Also the joiner is letting by slightly. How can I tell, what does the resonator look like? Thanks!

Does it only happen at the revs equal to 70mph in 6th? Or only at 70mph regardless of gear?

Ie - does 70mph in 5th produce the same drone, or (guesstimating) does it come in at “2500rpm” in other other gears regardless of speed?

Coded exhaust valves won't cause the drone.

Sounds like a res delete pipe is in place.

The AWD Superb 280 has a resonator (square looking box) in front of the rear axle.

The FWD Superb has a long rectangular pyramid type resonator at the centre of the car.

Sawtoothing on rear tyres?

Thanks for the pic. Here is the best I can do under mine looking from back to front. This is a 66 plate so I think it has the 272 engine, is that any different. The tyres are all new with only 1000 motorway miles so doubt they have developed uneven wear. Can’t get out to a decent length of 70mph road at present but from memory the drone disappears at around 3000+ rpm. Hope this helps and very interested in any ideas?

Yup, based on ur pic - that definitely has a resonator delete pipe.

272 has similar exhaust setup to 280 - both AWD.

So what can I do to stop the drone - cheaply?

Also how can I find out what other mods may be lurking?

I'm not sure of cheap options, but either u remove the res delete pipe and put back the centre resonator back or replace with an Anti-drone Res delete pipe.

Not cheap though.

I have a RPM Performance Anti-drone Res Delete Pipe in my Superb.

No drone whatsoever at any speed or any engine load.

OK so what does a res delete give you other than a drone (in my case). Is this a performance upgrade that I should be notifying to my insurers?

Going very technically, a well done elimination of exhaust components reduces "obstacles" to the flow of gasses out of the car, which would theoretically assist in increasing extraction speed and help the turbo spool earlier and better. In performance applications, of course.

Other than bringing annoying drone and noise, of course! 😄

Well is does go very nicely, I had a 2015 Golf R estate and it feels quicker on pickup than that, but that was a while ago.
