Buying advice 2.0 tdi

Featured Replies

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help or point me to somewhere that can?

I have the opportunity to buy, VERY cheaply ( £750 ) a 2012 Superb Estate 2.0 TDI.

High miles at 185K but is good condition and FSH, many of the miles are motorway, Timing belt done 2 yrs ( 25K ) ago, clutch done at 150K

I want to know....

  1. Do these cars wear their miles well? I've read the 2.0 is not quite as robust as the 1.9?

  2. What should I be looking out for?

thanks, Tom.

I have a 2012 Elegance 2.0 170bhp saloon. I bought the car 10yrs ago with 50k miles on it. It now has 207k miles. It has been the best car I have owned. I have it serviced every 12k miles. Got timing belts and water pump at 80k and 160k. The egr valve failed a couple of years ago and due to the cost of repairing it I had my mechanic blank it and map it out. Anything else over the years has been the expected brakes, rear shocks and ball joints and abs sensor. Does 50 plus mpg on average with a mixture of driving. It is still on the original clutch. I have thought about changing to a later facelift Mk2 but I cannot justify it as it would probably be little, if any, better. My mechanic looks after a few of these and one is a taxi with 350k miles and going strong.

If the car you are looking at has decent bodywork and interior, no warning lights on the dash with a full service history I would say it's a bargain.

Cheers for your reply Pat, that’s encouraging 👍👍 maybe I shouldn’t be overly worried about the mileage then.

I’m interested about your egr valve experience as I had read that on the 2.0 it’s a pig of a job as it’s very difficult to get to on the back of the engine? So it can blanked off and then some form of ecu mapping is required?

Yes that's it in a nutshell. It's a difficult and costly job to replace it due to it's location. It can be "mapped out" with the software on a laptop. My mechanic did it and put a stage 1 remap on at the same time, improving the torque and increasing the bhp to 195. Car drove more responsive and great high end power for overtaking if needed. Just gives you the confidence to know it's there.

I have 2010 170hp manual, now 275k miles. Wont drink oil and runs great.

Ex owner did dual mass and clutch +turbo about 215k miles. Those usually break at that miles what ive looked. But you have done clutch allready.

Some services are harder than old 1.9tdi but not bad. Thermostat takes some work so maybe look that it works or if not, reduce price.

Even at winter gives warm.

Lots of near 400k mile ones here too so its not weak engine.
