“Towbar Preparation “

Featured Replies

Hi all

Thought I’d steam in with a first question within 1 week of ownership.

The dealer’s (Arnold Clark Linwood, Paisley) blurb said “Towbar Preparation “.

Presuming that’s not some sort of ointment, what exactly is it?

I took photos underneath and to my untrained and somewhat cynical eye, it looks like it just means a panel has been removed.

Is there anything useful there?

Hello, welcome to the forum. It means that the wiring loom required for towbar electrics has been fitted during assembly.

Thanks. Presumably that bit of loom there.

Possibly not that one - I'd expect factory towbar prep to incorporate a multi-pin socket and a Can bus module, that loom is possibly tail light wiring or rear parking sensors.

So do I, it will be behind a side panel in the boot not outside or underneath

are you looking to do it yourself or getting someone to do it?

Neither really right now. I was just looking to see what was there, according to the sales blurb description.

Best case scenario would have been me just having to buy the towhook itself and slotting it in.

Worst case is that just the bit of trim has been removed and there’s nothing else there.

Which seems to be the case. I’d rather have the trim back on right now.

Even with towbar prep you will need a wiring loom to the final sockets it will also not mean just slap the ball on.

Unless the car was used and they just took it off.

I have had cars with Prep and the rear cross member or valance still needed to be removed and replaced with the towbar. Still have a cross member from a Ford in my Garage after selling the car with the towbar still on.

But with prep and a dedicated loom there is no need for extra lamp or beeping when the trailer is attached the car tells you when a bulb is out on the trailer, it disconnects the rear sensors when the trailer is attached and lets the stability controls know you are towing, loads of advantages.

I’m a-pondering now whether to go for a simple, dumb towbar, with detachable hook. The sort of thing I can install myself.

The only thing I need it for is a HD bike rack that I already own, and it would be driving very local, within 10 or 12 miles, to go cycling with my wife. I’ve only seen a police car in this village or the roads nearby, once in 25years.

Doubtless I’ll get nicked within 200 yards if I do.

I have had two Superb Mk3's with towbars which I use for cycle racks.

The first was an aftermarket towbar which needed software to link it in to the car.

The second, and my current Superb, has a factory fitted towbar.

Basically cycles block the rear light clusters very effectively and unless you link the lights on the towbar to the car you will have a major problem.

I have a Mk.4 Superb on order with a factory fitted towbar but if you have a Mk.4 without a towbar and it doesn't have towbar preparation already then unfortunately I cannot really see a way forward.

If it does have towbar preparation then a dealer can fit this
