Oil Consumption & MPG Drop – Skoda Kodiaq 2023 2.0 TDI 200bhp Laurin & Klement 4x4

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for feedback from other Kodiaq owners (or anyone with the EA288 2.0 TDI 200bhp engine) regarding oil consumption and fuel economy.

My car:

  • 2023 Skoda Kodiaq Laurin & Klement 2.0 TDI 200bhp

  • Purchased May 2025

  • Mostly motorway driving, Eco mode, Adaptive Cruise Control, using ONLY Premium Super Diesel

Oil Top-Ups (before consumption Test):

  • 12,185 miles - 1 Litre 0W-30

  • 15,076 miles - 1 Litre 0W-30

  • 17,540 miles - 1 Litre 0W-30

Current Status:

  • Car booked for oil consumption test on 29th October at 18,509 miles

  • Now at 19,468 miles (just under 1,000 miles since consumption test started)

  • Will book in over next 2 weeks with Skoda for analysis results

Fuel Economy Trend:

  • 21/10: 43.92 mpg (531.5 miles / 55.02 litres)

  • 29/10: 41 mpg (207 miles / 22.95 litres)

  • 06/11: 41.5 mpg (453.2 miles / 49.73 litres)

  • 16/11: 40.18 mpg (474.7 miles / 53.71 litres)

Previously, I was seeing 600+ miles per tank, now closer to 500 miles, despite no change in driving style or fuel type.

Questions for the community:

  • What MPG are you getting in real-world motorway conditions with this engine?

  • Have you experienced similar oil consumption (3 litres over mileage stated above)

  • Any known recorded issues, fixes or updates from Skoda for this anywhere?

I’d appreciate any comparisons or advice, especially from those who’ve had this investigated under warranty.

Many thanks,
Lars

Are you seeing frequent DPF regenerations, and/or are regens often interrupted?

Hi Warrior193, thank for the reply.

I can't say I have ever seen a DPF regeneration. I assume the car would inform me via the dashboard its started or is doing one?
Owned Petrol cars for the last 20+ years.

Not being a CI driver, I'm not sure that there is any visual indication on the instrument panel while a DPF regen is being performed - the only references I've heard of are elevated idle speeds, cooling fans running at high speed at engine switch off and unusual burning smells from exhaust system.

What was the mileage when you purchased the vehicle in May?

2 Degrees this morning, drove 2 miles turned off engine and fan was going. I've heard it before but don't really know the regularity. I will say its definitely not every journey for me to notice. Mileage was just over 12k when collected from main dealer.

How is the Oil consumption test being done? Is it, New oil & filter in engine. Then drained & weighed. 856 grams a Litre. Oil back into engine and the miles driven then the oil dropped and weighed. Did they seal the dip stick tube and the oil filler cap?

From my understanding yes to all of the above. I will be booking in the car again over the next week or 2 for Skoda to review oil usage.

I asked Co-Pilot for a quick review of my data against official VW group figures and its come back with the following:

Oil Consumption:

My vehicle 0.56 L/1,000 km Expected Real World ≤ 0.5 L/1,000 km

MPG (motorway) 40–44 mpg Expected Real World 48–55 mpg

Fuel Economy

  • Your average:
Based on your logs and motorway-heavy driving with Eco mode and premium diesel:
    40–44 mpg UK (recent trend: 43.9 → 41 → 41.5 → 40.2 mpg).

  • Expected real-world for EA288 2.0 TDI 200bhp:

    • Motorway: 48–55 mpg UK

    • Mixed: 42–47 mpg UK
Your figures are closer to mixed driving averages, not motorway-heavy usage. This suggests something is impacting efficiency (e.g., frequent DPF regens, sensor issues, or engine condition).

At 2 miles run, that would sound like an interrupted DPF regen.

If the mileage was around 12k when purchased and you topped up with 1 litre of oil at 12,185, the oil level was presumably very low when vehicle was handed over - is that correct?

Yes, it was within days of me collecting the vehicle.

Expected Real World Oil consumption is not 0.5 litres 1,000 km / 621 miles. VW Group have said for 2 decades 'May use as much as' according to conditions, and for every engine 3,4,5,6, 8, 12 cylinder petrol or diesel. This is not the 'within tolerances, it is just them covering there back end. Running solo, not in extreme weathers and not towing. 0.5 litres in 1,000 km is too much oil used.

I'm not sure I'd trust them much if it's common for them to hand over vehicles without oil even being checked - what else is being skipped?

Is there any visible sign of this oil being burnt?

Yes I agree, essentially with my driving style, fuel type, conditions, etc..... I would not expect to use as much oil as I do.

As stated earlier I was curious to understand if anyone had similar experiences with this type of engine and/or vehicle.

I carry a litre of oil in my Kodiaq as a matter of course, as when the oil light comes on I put a full litre in to top it back up to the correct dip-stick level.

The vehicle still has over a years warranty left. Obviously I want any issues resolving during this period as I don't want to be hit with a huge bill further down the line if there is any root cause found, or understand if this is 'normal'.

Thanks for all your responses.

Waiting for an oil light and being as low as 1 litre really is an issue. An issue with new cars / demonstrators and these then are used cars. How is the correct Oil Level being acheived, is it the engine AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE, and checked after a few minutes, parked on the flat. Or is it the Stone Cold oil dipped? Running low oil levels like 1 litre low is working that oil hard,. & maybe using more oil.

One idiot tech doing an official oil consumption test here thought a litre of oil was 1,000 grams. That owner got a new engine. These were the infamous 1.4 TSI Twinchargers. 0.3 litres in 1,000 km was excessive oil use.

Very true, I guess the 2 occasions 'after' the initial fill from collect have caught me out if I am being honest (even though I was carry additional oil).
I would find it odd to be checking my oil level every 1000km or less and topping up my oil, but if this is 'expected' then I will have to keep an eye on my oil level and check on a more regular basis. I guess I would check my oil every time I fill the petrol tank.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome is for the consumption test.
Since the early days of ownership I was also achieving over 600+ miles to a tank, so I am guessing something must be a miss.

Again thank you all for your comments and input.

It is 'Expected' in the first 5,000 km to check the oil level. Another thing in the Owners Manual says about possibly using more oil than the 0.5 litres / 1,000 km. But then a Demonstraor at a Dealership might never get the oil checked in the 3,000 miles till they sell used or if a Warning Light shows. Then there are the cars with the oil low right from the PDI or the UPDI, or after a service.

I will make sure I get a full analysis report when the Kodiaq goes in over the coming week(s) when the vehicle is booked in.

If 'my situation' is unique or out of normal operating circumstances, it will be interesting if the route taken is an engine replacement.......

obviously suggesting the calculations around oil weight and usage are calculated correctly.

100% agree.... I am certain it didn't burn a full litre in less than 200 miles, and should have been done on the UPDI.
The first oil top-up was done by AA (at my home location), as requested by the Skoda dealership.
I did suggest I could check the dip-stick, purchase the correct oil and fill up myself......... but Skoda insisted at the time.

Is your engine fitted with a normal dip stick - or is it one of these new 'wait until the low oil warning lights up'? - A terrible idea IMO.

My sisters Land Rover was 'dip-stick less', and the engine seized....... but that could be a number of reasons and probably off this topic..... but yes terrible idea!

My Kodiaq has a dip-stick and a warning on the Infotainment system that comes up.... although my good lady would argue some days the car has 2 dip-sticks in it when I'm driving......

There are no visible leaks from the engine, that's been confirmed by Skoda and also by myself.
There is only a 'smell' when the fan is going, and I now know that to be the DPF regen (thanks).
The exhaust tips are clean, not a great deal of soot (if any) and no sign of oily residue.

No sign of blue smoke from exhaust.

Hi,

I do have the same Kodiaq Mk1 MY22 TD200 4x4 L&K.

Bought it in last April @ ~40000km. Had the oil and oil filter changed @47000 km (since previous maintenance had been a bit offset by previous owner). It now has 53000km, but I haven't topped up yet, mainly because, the dealer had poor a bit too much oil in... It's now at the max allowed level. I'll check how it decreases over the next months...

Dealing with fuel consumption, I've similar fuel burn values, I'd say.

A full tank (~58l) enables me to cover 800 to 880km depending on driving style and outside temp.

Real average fuel consumption (calculated value, not dashboard value) is 7.30L/100km since I'm the owner (~13000km over last 7 months). I've dropped down to 6.9l once or twice. Max value was over 8.0l once after a 300km trip on french motorway with a 80-100kmh headwind. Most of the time, it's between 7.1 and 7.4l/100km.

Extremely poor (and risky) for them to have overfilled by that much - how far above max was it after the service?
