New tyre advice needed

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have recently bought a used RWD Skoda Enyaq 80 Sportline Plus (although no one at Skoda has been able to tell me what the Plus really means lol-not that that's the reason I bought it).

It needs 2 new front tyres. It currently has the Bridgestone Turanza Eco, which I assume came fitted from the manufacturer. It has 23k miles on the clock. Tyre size is 235/50/R20 100T

I will be using the car daily (mostly short journeys with longer journeys on the weekends) and it'll be my family car. Local tyre shops are quoting me 2 different types of Turanza's-the Eco and the 6.

The 6 is newer and more expensive and has some improvements.

I would welcome the feedback and guidance of the Enyaq drivers here-should I go for the Eco or is the 6 a suitable and worthwhile investment?

Cheers!

In the winter, summer tyres will often have much less grip than winter rated tyres such as all-season tyres with the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain SnowFlake) symbol.

Perhaps fit four new wheels with winter rated tyres, such as 255/50R19 103T 8Jx19 ET45 5/112 57.1...and leave the summer wheels for summer.

Check in the car's CoC (Certificate of Conformity) that this exact wheel specification is approved by Skoda...or the insurance company might consider it a modification.

This size is listed in wheel-size.com, but they do often make mistakes...hence the need to check the car's CoC.

As you can see from an extract of the Enyaq owner's manual below, both 235/55R19 8Jx19 ET45 and 255/50R19 8Jx19 ET45 wheels are approved by Skoda for the use of snow chains (with links and locks no larger than 9mm).

Technical data and specifications (from Enyaq owner's manual)

Permitted rim and tyre combinations for mounting snow chains:

Tyre dimensions

8J×19 ET45

235/55R19

8J×19 ET45

255/50R19

Only use snow chains with links no larger than 9 mm, including locks.

The Turanza 6 was released in 2023, it is a summer tyre (a seasonal tyre not aimed at use in winter). There are actually 2 versions available in 235/50 R20 100T, one with seal, the other without (both have enliten). The version with seal is likely to be £60+ extra per tyre (guessing nearer £250 each, probably nearer £300 if you don't shop around)

I think the Turanza Eco has been discontinued (so presumably you are being offered old stock, even if they are new and unused). I doubt if the tyre shop said it was a clearance item, probably just gave you a lower price.

Confusingly there is also a similar named Turanza all season 6 (which is more suitable for all year use in UK climate).

If it was me I would be changing all 4 to all season version, and then getting them swapped front-back every 12k to 15k miles to even out the wear.

Enyaq 80 and most other MEB chassis cars with the 77kWh battery have staggered tyre widths. Rears on are 255/45R20 so cannot be rotated with the fronts.

The Enyaq parts catalogue shows that the car left the factory with either four of the same rims or staggered rims, depending on the build code and sometimes also depending on the date the car was manufactured.

However, you can't go wrong if you follow what's in the CoC (Certificate of Conformity).
