how does window switches work?

Featured Replies

hi guys.

my passenger window switch got wet recently by a service guy and the switch got shorted so when it was connected the window will try to go down on it's own.

I tried to disassemble the switch and clean the corrosion off. unfortunately it did not work for me, the auto down problem was solved but i had no manual down feature and no auto up feature.

had a spare broken switch from another fabia of the same model, tried to change the copper pad, the silicone pad, and the switch casing (what you pull/push to use the button) and it still had the same problem.

I saw a guy on YouTube who tried to reverse engineer the switch the window regulator defrenciate auto up from manual up but the resistance it gives.

if any of you know what is wrong with the switch please tell.

I'm just curious to know how they designed it because I couldn't figure it out.

P.S. serial number is: 5j0 867 435

Think the switches are similar to tv remote control so when they get dirty/greasy/wet stop working. I tried cleaning mine but ended up buying another switch as they are only about £10 for an aftermarket one. On the fabia mk1 the drivers window motor unit controls the passenger side. It may be the same on the MK2. Does the window work from the drivers side? If the drivers side is failing it can cause problems with passenger side. On mine the passenger side stopped working quickly followed by the drivers side.

There is also the possibilty that the wires that come through either the drivers door or passenger door pillar are broken/damaged. If its the drivers side motor/controller then Breezy pete on here fixed mine for me. Very quick and reasonable priced service.

it seems to be controlled kinda seperetly because there is not need for driver switch/passenger switch to be able to control the passenger window. if one of them work you can control the window.

it seems to loose some fonctunality thats it.

The drivers side motor also supplies the passenger side with power. If the passenger side is working then I assume the drivers side is ok. I would replace switch as they arent expensive but before you do put press window switch down and keep holding for 10 secs once its completely down and press up and again hold for 10 secs once completely up. It will reset windows motor and in my case bring back auto up and down.
