Superb towbar

Featured Replies

Anyone knows whats the issue in retrofitting original Skoda towbar? Dealer says it can't be done vecause there is bo software. But they sell the cars with "towbar preparation"...

This was my experience. As there was another fault I was able to sell the car back. Eventually I found a used Mk 4 with factory fitted integral towbar and coding. From reading round on the internet I've seen suggestions that VAG have not released access to the coding due to EU legislation. I have read of some fitters suggesting use of universal electrcs/controls but there may be problems caused by this plus loss of warranty. The fitter recommended to me was very reluctant to explore universal connections. It is appalling that the cars are described as having 'towbar preparation' when hardware can be retrofitted but there is no supporting software available.

Yeah. Car has SFD2. But its beyond logic that official dealer can't access coding...

So, it seems that towbar (original) cannot be fitted to newest Superbs:

"For vehicles manufactured until CW 27/2025."

That suggests that the accessory towbar is not suitable for PHEV, but can the PHEV be ordered with the factory fitted towbar?

Interested because we're planning on buying/leasing a Superb PHEV to tow a 1600kg caravan.

I have the PHEV (my2026) with (electronical) towbar, so yes.

My March 2025 Superb mk4 has a dealer-fitted towbar (well, they got a third-party in to fit it on their premises, before I collected the car from new). It’s a TowTrust detachable, and doesn’t seem as vulnerable to rusting as the previous factory-fitted towbar on my mk3.

The main issue presented by the software issue (the only one I notice) is when reversing. In order to do so you have to keep your foot on the foot brake with a tiny pressure in order to stop the safety systems putting the brakes on (hard!). It is possible to reverse like this when you also depress the accelerator at the same time. It’s a pain, but manageable. And you make slow progress. I use my motor mover on the caravan as much as possible anyway.

I was not warned about the problem when I ordered the car, which was already in the dealer group stock. I got a good deal on the car because it was already in their stock, and I can tow my caravan, so I get by.

Also had a TowTrust detachable tow bar fitted by Indespension Ipswich .. not had a chance to try it out yet so can't comment on any software issues.

I enquired about he software update and told when it is availably athey would update free of charge.

Very pleased with the work, they used the Skoda 'tow bar ready' socket and factory wiring kit..

Such an easy job to attach and detach the tow ball., and the 13 pin socket is hidden and swings down when required. .. nice bit of kit

Had one fitted in Bristol and haven’t had any issues

Also had a TowTrust detachable fitted in the Midlands. Good job. As the towbar electrics aren't coded into the car due to SFD2 mentioned earlier, all the clever car stuff is not enabled (e.g. alarm linked to connected trailer, gearbox aware of trailer so may change gear differently, reversing sensors being disabled and other stuff I am sure) So far it's been 2 years I think that Skoda have not managed to provide a way for 3rd parties (or dealers?) to properly code in a trailer.

I tried Skoda customer service, but they just seem to acknowlege the issue, then let you know in 10 different ways how it isn't their fault and they don't need to do anything about it.

I think I read somewhere that the new Octavia can even report the trailer nose weight from the suspension sensors!

The other issue I have found is that unladen, the towball is very high. When I went on a test run, I smashed the bottom of the rear steadies getting off the drive. I will either have to make sure the car is full, or motor mover it off the drive first. On the plus side, I can hardly feel the 1 ton extra weight on the back - 2.0 TDI 193PS DSG 4x4 L&K

Last week official dealer tried to activate OEM towbar on my MK4 (late2025) and they could not do it.

Probably no pre teen child available there that knows how to use the equipment.

Yeah, weird. I don't know what to do anymore
