vRS brakes on a Scout?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade the brakes on my 2016 Octy Scout - my driving can be "spirited" at times, and sometimes I get home and notice that I would be able to cook my dinner on my brakes.

My question is:
Would I be better off changing the discs for some higher-end perforated ones;

Or - is it possible to retrofit vRS calipers and discs with 17" wheels? (I don't want to go up to 18" or 19" wheels as I have several sets of 17" alloys and tyres)

I look forward to your thoughts

I'd be inclined to try a harder brake pad before ging to the expense of changing calipers and discs.

I've used EBC pads with some sucess on my Volvo Amazon historic rally car (now sadly gone) and my BMW 740 Sport. They make pads for different degrees of lunacy (!) but I've found the basic Greenstuff ones adequate so far. They are often available from Euro Car Parts and I'll be switching to these on my Octavia vRS at the next service.

One advantage of Greenstuff pads is that you don't get that 'orrible black dust on your wheels because they don't contain copper......

Have you tried carrying more speed through the corners and roundabouts so you don't need to brake so much? 😉

On a more serious note, are you sure you don't have any seized sliders or calipers?

Alternatively, you could slow down and chill out a bit. If you're driving so quickly on the road on a regular basis to get your brakes that hot then I think it's your driving that's the first thing that needs looking at.

In case you think I'm the kind of driver that dawdles about and is a supporter of Brake and 20mph limits, think again.

What size discs are currently fitted?

The Octavia MK3 150PS Scout uses 288x25mm front brake discs, whereas the more powerful Scout uses the bigger 312x25mm front brake discs.

272x10mm rear brake discs are used with both the 288x25mm and 312x25mm front brake discs.

In case there are exceptions to the above, always check the car's build codes to be sure what is fitted to any particular car.

If you currently have 288mm discs you should be able to upgrade to 312mm discs by upgrading the carriers and just reuse your existing calipers

288mm are a bit weak when it comes to heart resistance. I remember I used to regularly cook the brakes on my Leon FR - so I would imagine a heavier Octavia would be worse. That being said, I was driving in a manner I wouldn't do before 11pm or after 5am!

Larger brakes are more heat resistant than smaller setups. That being said, with the same caliper, I'm not sure 24mm is going to make a huge difference. It's also worth noting re the vRS brakes that the 340/312mm setup is very heavy - a lot of unsprung weight.

As you can see below, 288x25mm front brake discs weigh about 7.3kg whereas 312x25mm front brake discs weigh about 8.6kg.

Not sure on the weight figures for a 340mm disc, but I can tell you it feels like a lot!

Just cruise without hard braking for a few mins after your mad stuff.

The airflow over the rotors will help cool them down a bit.

Heaps cheaper and probably good to let the turbo cool down a bit too

340x30mm front brake discs weigh about 10.8kg, which is about 25% more than the 312x25mm front brake discs and about 50% more than the 288x25mm front brake discs.
