Petrol into Diesel Engine

Featured Replies

So, where to start with this one.

Car went into bodyshop for some insurance repairs and despite their insistence otherwise, they've managed to put petrol into my diesel engined Superb. Went to pick it up on Friday evening to find it running like the proverbial bag of spanners, spouting foul smelling smoke etc. Called the AA out on Saturday morning who instantly diagnosed mis-fuelling simply by smelling the filler cap!

Have spoken to the Insurance co and to be fair they're being very understanding. Less so the bodyshop. According to them, they've had the "fuel doctor" out who's drained the engine and jobs a good'un - come and get yr car.

Am I being a bit precious in stating to the bodyshop I want more than a simple "fuel doctor" to look at the motor - from speaking to the AA mechanic and simple google use, there is a good chance of physical damage to the engine which needs fully checking by a professional.

I should state that I ran the car for about 3 or 4 mins max before turning off to avoid any further damage.

Ahhh ****, I did this twice in my driving experience - approx 15 years with diesels.

They need to completely drain the tank and change the fuel filter. Then to inspect the fuel filter for metal shavings.

The main problem with the petrol in the diesel engines is the lack of lubricity in it.

In the non-CR diesel engine I would add small amount of 2T ashless oil, but in the modern ones - no.

A decent mechanic should check the values of low and high pressure fuel pumps( the one in the tank and in the engine bay). Also listen for whining noises from HPFP.

Injector values as well.

3-4 minutes most likely didn’t cause any issues, but triggered errors for sure. So maybe clear them, drive from cold to fully warm engine and see are there new errors.

Injector values should be check when cold and once again after the engine reaches operating temperature.

Good luck 👍
