This morning I could not change gear (5 speed manual) and had to leave car at home.

Last night I had to negotiate some floods.

Is there a connection?

i had this on a mk1 fabia after driving through a flood , not advice but what i did was to turn the car over with the ignition for a brief moment while the car was in gear and handbrake off ,it freed the clutch , once again though not advice

The flood may be a coincidence. Check that the plastic gear selector on top of Gbox isnt seized. Happened on my old Seat and couldnt move gearstick to select gears.

Does the gearstick actually move or is it solid. If it moves check the cables that go to gear selector on Gbox are still attached etc.

Yes thanks. Yesterday I gave it a waggle and it works fine. I have given the selector mechanism a quirt of WD.
