glowplug fault

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The other day a yellow engine light appeared on the dash on my 2016 2.0tdi 150bhp scout with 95k on the clock.

Ive borrowed a basic obd reader which has showed one code which is P0671 indicating a glow plug issue in cylinder 1. The code wouldnt clear but when driving today the dash light isnt there anymore.

So, I hope you dont mind a few questions ....

  1. Which is glowplug 1 and where is it on the head ?

  2. Does the light going out itself mean its now OK.

  3. Would a spray if WD40 clean the connection?

  4. If I need to change it can I just do the one.

  5. If I change it how easily do they break and if I dont have torque wrench for 15nm then how tight should I nip it.

Thanks all .

Cylinder 1 should be the left most cylinder, easiest way to tell is find the glow plug with the biggest connector as that's cylinder 3.

The light going off means that the initial reason for it faulting has been resolved, the reason it wouldn't clear is the ECU needed to verify the issue was resolved, more than likely this is indicating a failing glow plug.

Contact cleaner probably wouldn't help as it's more than likely the glow plug internally failing.

You can but the others would probably not be too far behind so it's probably best to just do them all.

Just screw it down until it feels tight and then give it a small bit extra, pretty much treat it like a spark plug.

It all depends; typically about 120k miles for a set of glow plugs. Depends on how many stop/start cycles have occurred.

I know this potentially sounds expensive, but if one glow plug is failing, the rest aren't too far behind. Budget for a replacement set of 4 if you can.

Thanks, i was thinking all of them might be needing swapping if one was failing.

Ive seen these which seem like a good price and I can get them local too . Is the pressure sensing one the more expensive one ?

Also, ive read about them breaking which worrys me. Is it that much of an issue ?

cheers

They only break if you manhandle them; the tips are brittle, otherwise its fine. Please try to go with the best OE or Bosch parts as economising here will cause later problems. A set of 4 glowplugs including the pressure transductor is anywhere from £120-140 for reasonable quality parts.

Yeah they are the ones i fitted (Bosch) i just replaced 1,2 and 4. the sensor one is around £120 (Skoda will charge around £200) that was 3 years ago, so far touch wood, its been fine, i used a ceramic grease on the threads, 10nm, an airline to clean around the well, last thing you want is crap getting into the engine, a can of compressed air wil do the job, no1 is to the far left as you look down on the engine.

They are at the front of the engine, easy to see and get the engine hot first before removing, you'll need a deep 10mm 1/4 drive socket, 12mm for the no3.

I would buy a torque wrench, rather than guess.
