Rattle / rumble noise between idle and 900rpm

Featured Replies

Morning all, I've got an annoying rattle / rumble noise from the car when the RPM is just above idle speed and 900rpm.

I've looked at what i think would be the obvious things to check; like is the engine cover fitted correctly, are the under trays secure, anything obviously loose but I cant get to the bottom of it.

My local garage has also checked suspension / steering components / brakes to make sure theres no safety issues. Has anyone come across this type of thing before. If so, what solved it for you?

Any help appreciated, I cant abide squeaks and rattles when driving. They do my head in!!

@mikeo84 I had to look at your profile to see you show as having a 2014 vRS. So what is it, TSI or TDI, Manual or DSG?

Apologies.

Its a TDI with DSG gearbox.

Thanks. How many miles has it done, and has the DSG servicing been every 40,000 miles?

Its done 74000, DSG was serviced at 35k and 60k - which was when I bought it.

The noise sounds like it is coming from the front drivers side area. It cant be heard under the bonnet but can be heard in the cabin.

That will be the dual mass flywheel beginning to fail in that case.

Im not sure, I've had cars with failing DMF before and it doesnt sound (sounds more plastic noise rather than metallic noise) or feel the same (i cant feel any vibration when the noise is there).

But ill discuss with my mechanic and ask if they can check or test somehow.

Thabks for the suggestion.

Sorted this noise just for information.

There was a nut missing from the fuel filter housing that I've replaced and the timing cover appeared to be loose.

I've fixed those and the rattle has stopped. Thank goodness as it was driving me round the bend!!
