Ebay spare wheel kits Vs ordering from dealer/Caffyn's etc?

Featured Replies

I'd like to get a space saver spare for my Karoq 2023 1.0.

I see there are official versions e.g. here from Caffyn's which are ~£350

Or there are these kits available on Ebay which obviously don't include the foam inserts, but look like they have everything else and come in at ~£169.

The foam insert if I decided I wanted it seems to be quite cheap.

Does anyone have any experience with the Ebay versions of the kits?

Is there any obvious reason for going the official route rather than the Ebay example?

Thanks for any input

Keep an eye on FaceBook market place - you can often pick up the complete kit for £25 - £50 including foam insert.............you might have to buy the big plastic securing bolt as these do vary on some vehicles.

I went the EBay route with our Fabia; got a refurbed matching alloy rim, set of tools in the polystyrene moulding and the plastic nut and clamp to hold the spare wheel in the boot. All came from different sellers, tools were Audi A3 and still wrapped, nut and clamp Seat Ibiza. As always check the feedback, the alloy wheel was perfect not buckled or damaged in any way.

Skoda sell two "foam and jack" kits for the Karoq. One is for the Karoq FWD, and the other is for the Karoq 4x4. The "foam and jack" kit includes everything, except for the actual spare wheel...which can be ordered separately.

These "foam and jack" kits can be ordered from any VAG parts department, by quoting the relevant OEM part number, ie. 57A093860B for the Karoq FWD or 57A093860C for the Karoq 4x4.

The standard space saver wheel for both of these kits is 125/70R18 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1 which are often sold secondhand on ebay from about £40...sometimes unused. However, 125/70R18 has an outside diameter about 5% smaller than standard Karoq wheels...so perhaps consider 135/80R18 instead of 125/70R18 fitted to the same 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1 steel space saver rim.

When fitted to a 3.5J rim, the 135/80R18 tyre is about 7mm wider than the 125/70R18 tyre...so check that there's 7mm of available space in the wheel well (when a 125/70R18 3.5Jx18 wheel is in the spare wheel well) before ordering a 135/80R18 tyre. The actual width of a tyre is measured when the tyre is inflated from sidewall to sidewall, at the widest point.

It might also be worth seeing if a standard full-size wheel fits in the spare wheel well...such as 215/60R16 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 (for the Karoq FWD) or 225/60R16 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 (for the Karoq 4x4).

I bought mine from here (also for a 1.0 litre Karoq). I keep the tools in the supplied bag in the cubby hole in the boot so no foam inserts needed. Used a couple of times and worked fine. I have a feeling (but can't be certain) that the spare wheel was stamped with the VAG logo but don't quote me on that.

Not sure that's correct. There's a 215/60/16 available for 2WD without the variable boot floor option. So I would expect that the two foam surrounds would be different heights to match the different width wheels.

Yes. Our 2023 Sportline (2WD) has a factory-supplied spare wheel and 215/60 R16 tyre.

The 57A093860B and 57A093860C kits on "skoda eshop cz" both list a 125/70R18 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 spare wheel with OEM part number 5E3601011B, as shown below.

Thanks for the advice.

Ended up going with Caffyn's in the end.

It's definitely the more expensive option, but everything fits and works so I'm happy.

  • 3 weeks later...

I recently bought a 24 reg Karoq SEL that has a 215/60 tyre on a 16x7 steel wheel as a spare fitted in an official Skoda foam surround. The car's standard 215/50x18 tyre & wheel will also fit into the wheel well. The kit does raise the boot floor.

However as the spare tyre is not a full size match for the standard wheels on the car it still legally limits the car to 50mph when fitted even though circumference is within 1%. I don't consider a spare wheel to be a true spare wheel unless fitting it places no limitation on the car. So I intend to buy a 7x18 alloy wheel (not necessarily a full match for the standard wheels) with a 215/50 tyre as a spare. I'll probably wait until the tyres need replacing & then buy the extra wheel & 5 tyres.
