Adding a CD changer

Featured Replies

Just bought a skoda octavia 2016 reg 1.4 TSI.

It's so great and has a hilarious number of upgrades compared to my last car: a 2005 skoda fabia with manual windows, no central locking and a boot lever in the driver side door. Now I get to open the boot AT THE BOOT!!

My wife would really like a CD player but it just has an SD card slot in the glove box. I can see some multimedia head units on ebay with a CD player for £40. Is it that simple to just change them over once I've bought one of those "release tools".

I think I currently have a Skoda Columbus MIB1 but I don't feel the need to change the screen bit. Is it easy to just change the bit with the SD card i.e. one in and one out or is it way more complicated than that?

Thank you for any advice.

(Was also thinking about adding in cruise control at some point but maybe I'll get the CD bit sorted first.)

The MIB units are actually in 2 parts - a simple screen in the centre console and the "brains" in the glovebox.

The real problem with any non-OEM unit is that it's an infotainment system not just an entertainment system - which means it also is used to control several car functions as well. None of the third party systems successfully do all of that.

So the real answer is to rip the CDs onto a large capacity SD card and use that in the car as an equivalent to a mega-multi CD changer.

For 2016, you probably have a MIB2 unit.

This is the answer. ^^^^^^^

You can even put separate folders of his and her music on it so she can just play her own cds

Mib2 Start Facelift O3.

Mib2 Start Facelift O3.

My 2015 Mk3, MY16 (pre-facelift) has MIB2, I believe MIB2 was introduced after MY15.

Wonder if the OP unit has Smart link enabled. Easier to use a streaming app from a phone than copying CDs onto an SD card..

Or buy a SEAT, my wife's 2019 Ateca has a single CD slot, but being in the glovebox you have to stop every 45 -60 mins to change the CD (only kidding, we've never used the cd player it's got Android Auto/AppleCarPlay anyway😆).

Yes I think you’re right. I will try that first.

Out of interest if I did want to hypothetically get an £40 oem glovebox thing with a cd changer second hand from eBay… Is it just swap it in and swap it out or are there way more steps and cost than that.

Yes she likes the authenticity of using the CD and seeing the front cover etc. and to be honest so do I.

An endless streaming option can feel a bit less personal sometimes. But if it’s not possible then SD card with folders might be nice

If it is this unit and you play from sd card you should see the covers

Totally get the tangible feel of a CD in a cover, unfortunately VW group moved away from that a while back.

I really miss my 6 disc changer and single cd Sony headunit in my old car with the infinity speakers I put in the doors, it sounded very good.

In my wife's car I find the sound a bit flat when connected via android auto, Bluetooth is better, CD much better.

Sorry that we cannot offer any better options, they integrated so much into these infotainment units with functions to see service info adjustments to lights wipers etc, you cannot easily change it all out without loosing functionality you still need 😕

Yes what a shame but the SD card option showing covers is a good compromise I think.

Thanks for all the help!

Many people mistake 2015 for a facelift year because of the significant Model Year 2016 (MY16) technical upgrades
