Engine enters limp mode

Featured Replies

Hello all Skoda fans. I have 2007 Skoda Octavia caravan. Mk1. 1.6 liter gas/lpg AEH engine. 74kw. 101 HP. Issue I have that car runs fine most of the time and then engine enters limp mode. Runs rough, looses power, sputtering on startup, etc.. Then runs fine. Went to multiple mechanics and electricians coul not find the issue. Also carpet is wet on front passenger side .Could it be that ECU gets wet due to its location and gets confused? Did anyone experienced similar issue and could share any solutions that they tried? Thank you in advance

U rly shuld get the car scaned to see what errors its getting. With that beeing said u can do some basic inexpensive stuff like cleaning maf, trottlebody cleaning, replacing fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. Ecu is right next to the wiperblade motors so i dont think its that. That is a seperate issue your heater core is prob leaking.

Thank you for your reply. Car was scanned and no obvious codes are present. Also if heater core was compromised wouldn't coolant leak inside? Coolant levels are fine and there is no coolant smell in the car. My suspicion on ECU being wet is based on fact that car is misbehaving more often during rainy days. Location of ECU is truly poorly engineered solution. Not sure if wrapping ECU in some weatherproof material is permitted.

Ok but what did u mean by passager carpet is wet? My guess is if ecu is getting wet it wudnt run at all. This is a long shot but does that engine have a ditributor? Becouse my first mk1 was aee had cracked distributor cap and was also runing rugh full of oil from leaking valve cover gasket and it also didnt like the rain wudnt shut down but u culd feel loss of power.

Carpet is wet. Must be leak somewhere so water from outside comes in. No it doesn't have distributor cap. Oil levels are fine. Mo loss of oil.

What scanner was used. If the car goes into limp mode I would be 99% certain a code is stored somewhere. You say Gas/Lpg engine. Is it running on LPG. Not sure how the system works but on my old LPG forklift if the antifreeze is poor the unit that supplies LPG tends to freeze up.

Not sure what scanner they used. It was showing camshaft position sensor intermittently but two new sensors were put in. Coolant has been changed year ago. Whole llnew lpg installation was done at the same time. My suspicion about ECU is due to floor being wet on front passenger side. I think I have leak somewhere. Read somewhere that due to its location Octavia mk1 ECU is prone to dumpness.

Could be ECU but maybe the connector is loose or needing cleaned. As said seems odd there are no fault codes. Maybe see if anyone has VCDS to see if there are any codes that the scanner didnt pick up. Wet passenger side is quite often leaking heater matrix but if theres no coolant loss maybe coming in at door seal or at passenger side window and through door itself.

I will try to clean ECU connector. Will look for shop that has VCDS and look closer for leaks. Thank you for your help

As it doesnt have codes just wondering if it is in limp mode. Do you have petrol and lpg and does it do the same on both. On my mk2 EML light is on when in limp mode. May be a lack of fuel problem with lpg.

It does on both fuels. Trying to get someone with VCDS who knows what are they doing to do deep scan and see if everything checks out. In the meantime will try to address water intrusion issue. Will update post once I get some headway on the problem. Thanks again

How is the timing set on the engine. I believe LPG timing is a good bit more advanced with propane than petrol. On older systems (distributor) they set it somewhere in between for optimal combustion of both. My LPG forklift ran very rough at idle plus spluttered etc until I advanced the ignition slightly. Just wondering if the timing is off slightly. On the forklft there is a small oil port on distributor to lubricate the centrifugal advance. If I dont oil it regularly the timing is out.

Had another thought. Check the strip fuses in engine bay. On my sons fabia there in front of battery box. They can crack but look fine. His ABS one went and randomly car got ABS light especially when damp. It was a hairline crack that couldnt be seen but when removed it fell in two. The others were fine but a but of corosion around where they bolt down. Not sure if any are related to ignition but worth a quick look.
