Engine stutter on low rpm acceleration

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to diagnose a strange issue on my 2013 Škoda Octavia Mk3 vRS 2.0 TSI, stock, about 180,000 km, and wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar.

The problem is a bit hard to reproduce consistently, but here’s the behavior:

  • At idle, the engine is perfectly smooth

  • At higher RPM, the car pulls cleanly with no issues

  • Under gentle driving, it’s mostly fine

  • BUT at low RPM (around 1500–2500), when accelerating (not necessarily flooring it, just moderate throttle), the car sometimes stutters briefly and feels like it loses power for about half a second, then continues normally

It’s not a violent misfire, more like a sudden hesitation or torque drop.

What’s already been done:

  • Spark plugs replaced recently

  • Ignition coils replaced

  • High-pressure fuel pump replaced

  • Car is completely stock (no tune)

I can't really reproduce the issue 100% but when testing i noticed its always second or third gear and also i checked with obdeleven and there are not any fault codes. I had an issue with misfire, that is the reason i changed the hpfp and since then there aren't any misfire readings on the obd and the driving seems smoother but theres still this stuttering.

So far I’m suspecting something like:

  • Low-pressure fuel pump starting to get weak

  • Diverter valve / boost control issue

  • Possibly PCV-related

Has anyone had similar symptoms on the EA888 engine? Any ideas what I should check next or log with obdeleven?

Thanks in advance!

As there are no codes it may be a leaking PCV/air intake or carbon build up on valves. I would have said coil packs first but again no codes/misfires and they have been replaced. It might also be a dirty throttle body but I would assume it wouldn't idle properly.

Something else to check may be the cam position sensor. Perhaps its failing/sending wrong info at revs above idle. Have had some fail without creating codes.
