Skoda Kodiak 4 and 2 wheel drive difference in specs?

Featured Replies

Hi all, Skoda Kodiak 4x4 AWD, and Skoda Kodiak front wheel drive....what codes or description spec's etc. differentiate between them ? My problem is that while my newest purchase of a 2020 Skoda Kodiak , 150 HP and Front wheel drive, is a delight in every way, my car insurance has gone through the roof, and when I queried it, I was informed that one of then reasons for the increase (more than.€200) is that its a 4x4 AWD. The problem is, there is only front wheel drive, and the rear wheels are free independent suspension, without any drive shafts at all. There must be a way to convince the insurers that the car is in actual fact just a Front Wheel drive car.. So my question is, what Nrs or codes are specific to the front wheel drive vehs? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, Regards, Jim.

Does the V5 document not give the correct drive system description?

I'm in Ireland, and the equivalent document we have here to the V5 used in the UK is the Vehicle Registration doc, and that's currently with the Irish transport department to get the vehicle registered in my name. I should have it back by the end of the week, but just now, I'm dealing with the Insurance company..and according to their classification, my Kodiak is 7 seat, 4x4 AWD. But I'm reasonably sure that each type of vehicle has its own specification Nr? Thanks for your help, Jim

@Jim Reire What engine is it, Petrol or Diesel, what gearbox, manual or DSG, what year is it? Is it a 1.4 or 1.5 TSI?

Hi, the year is 2020, engine 2.0 Ltr Diesel. 150 BHP, Automatic, 7 speed ( I think) 7 seater. Ambition class. ...I'm still trying to figure out what is what, and how it works.. no AWD or 4x4 badges on the tailgate.....and definitely no rear drive axel , just the two rear wheels hanging on their independent suspension's. Thanks for your help !! Jim

Hi,

If your Kodiaq was an AWD, you should have the 2 following PR codes:

G1D: Automatic transmission for AWD (so to say DSG7 type DQ381)

1X1: Four-Wheel Drive.

If you go to your local dealer and ask fo the PR codes list (explaining your insurance story), they should be able to give you the complete list of PR codes of your own Kodiaq.

With a FWD, your should get these 2 other PR codes:

G1C: Seven-speed automatic transmission (corresponding to DSG7 type DQ380)

1X0: Front Wheel Drive

I assume, this should be an evidence your insurance could rely on.

Thank you so much Bap33, that should solve the problem, but now I have to wait for the registration docs to be returned, and I will see what they say in relation to the specs, to use as proof.

Again, Thank you & Best Regards, Jim.

Hi Jim , do you have the My Škoda App ?

I can certainly see and download a certificate of all the things my Karoq has

@Jim Reire: IMHO, your local dealer should be able to print the complete liste of PR codes independently from your registration docs.

Mine was imported from Luxemburg to France through Germany. I didn't have any problem to get it, even though my final french registration docs were not done.

Bap33, I bought the car from an independent dealer, and I've told him about the problem, and he's promised to look into it, and see what he can do. I'm not sure how the local Skoda dealership would react, as I didn't buy the car from them...With a previous vehicle, an Mercedes Benz, E class, the local main dealer downloaded all the data I needed from the keys. Does Skoda use the keys also to store information?

A Dealership or Skoda Ireland should act like professionals and help someone that has a Skoda Vehicle and might buy another or might not on how Customer Service. Is. It is not Skoda Secret Service other than when there are Recalls, Sworkshop Actions, Software Updates etc.

At the end of the day, everything boils down to the individual that you are dealing with,,and unfortunately in too many instances, you will unfortunately, meet the one who is completely unsuited for such front of house position. And from previous experience with the local dealership, the help I got was grudgingly given, because I didn't buy the car from them. I'm not to eager to repeat the experience. But I do get your point, and thanks for your help, Best Regards, Jim.

Skoda have Customer Services and Bots / AI and contractors providing the service. No idea if Ireland use the same system as VW Group UK, but they can be so so and sometimes almost brilliant. But then that is how many Customer Services are now.

Well, until I receive the Registration docs back from the tax office, I wont be able to confirm the specs. But slowly, I'm gathering information..it seems that the AWD 4x4 Kodiaks, have the 8 speed gearbox, while the 7 seater, front wheel drive, use the the 7 speed gearbox... We will see, Thanks for your help, its appreciated! Best Regards, Jim.

@Jim Reire No 8 speed DSG,s in Europe unless you count 7 forward and reverse. 1.5 or 1.4 FWD do not use the DQ200 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG, they get a 7 speed wet clutch DSG.

Would the VIN number help you?

It should indeed. VIN gives the PR codes list and then the requested information.

I've entered the VIN code into several so called Free Vin Decoder's, but all reduce the free part to paid subscription averaging £30. Now when the tax office return the vehicle registration docs, I'll check the info on them, and if that fails, I'll go for the paid subscription one. Any recommendations on good decoders? Thanks and Best Regards, Jim

How about trying the direct approach with your insurance company?

Send them two images of your vehicle, 1 of the VIN plate, the 2nd of your rear axle as proof it is 2WD only.

TBH I'd be changing insurer if they can't even get vehicle details correct from a registration plate or VIN

Skomaz, I've already tried several insurers, but some are the same as the present insurer, at €800, some even higher. Seems that they are all using the same specs....as standard.

Thats the plan Warrior,,,I have until 27 June to re-insure, and for now I wait for the return of the Veh Registration doc, and see what designation that gives my FWD Kodiak. Thanks for replying, Best Regards, Jim.

Sorry, I don’t understand why you have to wait for registration docs. 🤔

The VIN won’t change with the registration docs and that’s the only (and reliable) input that your local dealer needs to give you the complete list of PR codes. 🤷‍♂️

Yes Bap, I contacted the dealer today about the registration docs, only to be told that the they had yet to receive the docs themselves from the previous owner! But they assure me that I will have the registration doc by next wednesday..... In any case, a very helpful Briskoda member named Pete, deciphered the VIN, and now I have proof that my Kodiak is indeed a front wheel drive, code 1XO. Next stop, contact the insurance again, and persuade them that the car is a FWD instead of their listed AWD. Fun times ahead!! Thanks and Best Regards, Jim
