Is there something wrong with my airbag?

Featured Replies

Went to get in the car this afternoon after it had been parked in the sun all day and I swear it never had this gap above the airbag before?! Has something moved? Could someone take a pic of their airbag to compare? It’s the standard round wheel and not the facelift one.

I’m away with work at the minute otherwise I would remove it and have a better look.

Pushing it does nothing other than sound the horn! Has something fallen off or moved or have I just never noticed it before!

Would parking in the sun do this? Can it be put back in place or is it a new airbag job?!

Press down on the airbag and see if it clicks into place.

Tried pushing it back an it’s no different. Will have to wait until I’m home and remove the airbag for a proper look.

My 2016 steering wheel, haven’t you had your steering wheel replaced a few times? Seem to recall you had standard then went flat bottom then back to standard

Thanks. This confirms that its definitely not right!

Yes I swapped to flat bottom then back to normal then switched to round/DSG wheel so the airbag has been on and off a few times. From what I can see on the back of it it looks to be clipped in ok.

I will wait until I am back from work trip later this week and disconnect battery and remove airbag and see whats going on.

Sounds best I wouldn’t want to drive it too much like that

I have two airbags in the basement, I still think it's unhooked...

I’ll see if I can disconnect battery and release airbag with the limited toolkit I have in the car.

Right. I managed to disconnect battery with pliers and release airbag with my house key.

It looks completely normal. Nothing broken, nothing loose. All wires in the right place.

It relocated well with a firm clunk each side. But still the gap.

I can’t believe that it’s always been like that and I’ve not noticed. It’s like it’s a facelift airbag on a pre facelift car. But it definitely isn’t. But I can’t understand why the gap is there. Nothing appears to be warped or out of place. Just doesn’t meet up.

I still have my non-dsg wheel at home that the airbag came on so I will check later this week what the airbag looks like when fitted to that.

I’m a lot more comfortable to drive like it is as the airbag looks completely normal in isolation.

I’m now questioning my own sanity.

The wheel is from a 2018 karoq. I have just done some research on autotrader and it looks like even the earliest Karoq had the deeper type airbag with the crease at the top! And I’ve been driving it for the last 3 months like this and never noticed?!

I will double check against my old wheel but if thats the case then I can live with it, as safety wise it shouldnt be an issue.

Does anyone know if the newer type airbag is interchangeable and has the same plug into the clockspring? @Cairus ?

Incase I fancied changing it in the future.

Might be worth asking in the Karoq forum if there’s is the same.

To me it just looks like if the airbag went off the whole airbag assembly will just shoot at you rather than the airbag, apparently when airbags go off you usually get a broken nose but wouldn’t be surprised if that’s worse.

Drive slowly until checked and confirmed good

It’s my original superb airbag fitted to a karoq wheel. Pretty certain that it’s ok.

The airbags deploy by splitting the front of the cover open rather than anything from the back. The mountings are identical and it’s just the top trim that’s different.

Good morning. The yellow airbag connector is always the same on these vehicles. It's different with the mode and start buttons on the steering wheel, etc. I have several airbags at home and I'm familiar with the gap issue, but the gap is nowhere near as large as in your photos. I'm currently looking for a comparison photo...

Ok so if it is due to different airbag type then buying a karoq airbag would be a straight swap?

I still can’t believe that if it’s been like this from the beginning I wouldn’t have noticed!

Now take a good look at everything. Then you'll see what's what.

Yeah but I mean as it’s not seating correctly the whole lot could fly out as it’s half out already 🥲

It is 100% seated correctly. Very securely Held by the big springs. Just trim that doesn’t meet up.

It's clear that the airbag is not matched to the steering wheel.

Completely different profiles between the steering wheel and the airbag contour at the top.

Not sure how u missed that before when u fitted the airbag to the new steering wheel u fitted.

U either need the right airbag to match ur existing steering wheel, or the right steering wheel to match ur existing airbag.

I know. I can't quite understand how I didnt notice!

Now questioning how much I actually use the DSG paddles and whether its worth the risk. Might test fit the airbag on my old wheel just to confirm theres nothing up with it and then change it back. Alternatively will look out for a new airbag

If I have the right airbag, you can have it for the cost of postage.
