Yellow triangle warning on dash

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just had my water pump and thermostats replaced but next day after collecting car I have a yellow warning triangle and message on dash saying 'Put car in P and seek assistance' The car is a 2019 facelift 2 litre petrol DSG with 42k on clock. The temp gauge is at 90 so normal and car drove okay today but now I have this dash warning. Any ideas please. Am I okay to drive it like this. Garage does not know what it might be when I rang them a few hours ago. I'm about an hour's drive away from them atm.

No one will be able tu tell without scanning the car....

It is your only option

Yellow triangle is normally a non critical fault and should be ok to drive short distances. If it turns red then stop immediately. As previously said needs scanned to pin point but normally a message is displayed. The message Put in P could be a pointer to bad switch in gear selector. Try moving through all the gears multiple times. There are I believe microswitches that can wear out or become sticky so the car doesnt reckognise it being in park when you switch engine off.

Oh okay thanks, the triangle and dash message was coming on and off as I drove home. When I got back and lifted the bonnet the bonnet stay was so hot I could barely touch it.. and a lot of heat coming from front of engine, which can't be good. The garage who did the water pump said I can bring it in tomorrow and to drive slowly. I'm guessing it's related to the water pump and thermostat, as I've not had this warning sign before.

You said car was at 90C Wonder if they didn't bleed coolant system properly and you have an airlock hence the heat from front of engine. When driving tomorrow take it easy and if the temp starts rising anything above normal stop and let it cool down.

What’s the coolant level in the header tank?

What sort of garage was it? Main dealer, Indy, general garage?

Yes that's possibility, and yes thanks I will drive slow on the backroads to get to the garage 👍

When I picked up the car the coolant level was well over the max on the coolant tank, and the garage manager just said 'keep an eye on the levels'.. It's a VAG garage called Leziate Drove Garage here in Norfolk, they were/are my nearest VAG people. My usual garage could not work out why engine was so hot and told me to get a 2nd opinion, which is why I went to Leziate garage.

You could try running engine with cap unscrewed from expansion tank...this can release any air locks, 90'C on the gauge is just a guide, even when 105/08'C, the gauge will still say 90'C.... its just an indication that the temp is within range.

Why did you have water pump and thermostats replaced?

Hi, Turns out it wasn't an air lock, the mechanic showed me on his code reader the temp figures and all was normal for this engine - which he said always runs hot. The warning triangle and dash alerts were a separate issue and another common Skoda fault he said, which is the worn selector switch under the gear lever - a white plastic piece which wears out in the middle. So thankfully car is all good now and I will have the switch done in August along with my 40k DSG service. Water Pump and thermostat was replaced last week due to increased coolant loss which I'd been topping up every few weeks..

Glad it wasnt a major problem and only a microswitch
