How does a Leon Cupra R compare with an Octavia?

Featured Replies

I noticed somebody local has a Cupra R and wondered how they compare with an Octavia vRS?

I know the Leon 20VT is very similar, but the Cupra R has the TT/S3 engine.

Bigger turbo, more power, more torque, nicer seats, nicer wheels, bigger brakes, smaller cabin, smaller boot, more rattles.

Is that enough?

That's the sort of thing I'd expected

What's the 225 engine in standard form like compared to a nicely re-mapped 180? I'd expect slower throttle response and less low down torque.

I'd expect a smoother power delivery and huge remap/clutch shredding potential ;)

You missed out better handling ;)

Smoother power delivbery? How so?

With front wheel drive, it could all get a bit messy with a re-map... The TT's 4x4 would be more sensible!

The LCR will have been mapped by Seat to give a good clean power delivery. If it was all lag then "wallop" the motoring journos would have had a field day.

The vRS factory map isn't perfect...

Whats the reason for asking anyway? thinking of getting one ?

I'm just curious.

In my opinion, the Octavia's engine is just about spot on, post-mods. Power delivery is superb and economy is excellent. Grip and balance is good, but I've never got used to the slowness and soft turn-in of the steering. I was just weighing up the options for something similar....

I can't really justifiy it though! replacing the bushings would be cheaper!

My sensible head tells me to get a Mondeo STTDCi next... Point to point it would probably be quick and economy would be good on the motorway.

Slow turn in? Upgrade your ARB.

I'd considered that. Insurance issues...

Probably still cheaper than changing to a LCR though ;)

I need a decent luggage space for multiple bikes and camping kit.

I should really just buy an old van and a Caterham.... but then a lot of the good driving is on the way to bike events. Maybe I should get a V8 Holden Ute?

Donations accepted.

Seat Leon? New or Old shape?

Bit of a daft newbie question what will that do,

what size should you change too?

Do a search ;)

It's a pity that there wasn't an Octavia or Cupra R 4x4, like a cheaper S3.

My mates R has sepnt more time in the garage than him driving it!!!! I was tres shocked to be honest!!

1.8t is the tt/s3 engine just that the cupra is set at 225 same as 225 tt. diff being ( i think ) is a k04 turbo and dif mapping same as 225 tt..... know there is some biturbo cupras but dont think they all are .

I know a guy who has a new shape FR petrol - I sat in one at the motorshow and found it really small and flimsy - How does the FR compare to the cupra?

Remember too that sporting Seats use cut down scaffold bars instead of dampers.

5 years ago in France, you could get a Cupra 4-motion, with the TDI150 in it :D I was very tempted by it, but really needed a RHD car. Test drive was fun though :D

It was damn good value for money in my eyes too, but maybe that's just because it was 5 years ago

The new Seats.. are terrible.. flimsy and plasticcy inside... tbh ive seen better interiors in renaults :thumbdwn:

reagarding the leon vs octy debate... a remapped octy would reel in a lcr over 100mph.. even a standard one wouldnt be far behind because the octy is much more aerodynamic (octyII vrs top speed 150 vs 140 for the new leon tfsi)

also theres a school of thought to the fact a vRS could out-handle a cupra on track due to a slightly longer wheelbase.
