Oil Filter

Featured Replies

Do you all use the original/manufacturers oil filter or after market ones, their seems to be a visible size difference between the original ones and an after market one:confused:

Tom

I know in the past that it was a must to use genuine VW oil filters as yes they were bigger and held more oil!

the other thing is that some non genuine oil filters do not have a non return valve in them letting the oil drain out of the filter over night.

for what they cost I will always go with the origianls as there must be a very good reason why they are bigger.

Are the original VW ones not made by Mann Filter?

I know the air filters are, have to say i would use genuine ones for the small cost difference, but then I used to use FRAM or Purflux filters on all my old cars.

tbh if i cant get hold of an original one due to me being lazy or other wise ill go with a known brand one unless the size difference is huge. Prime example halfrauds own filters

I used a halford own once on an old knackered fiesta, because it needed doing and doing now. The thing wasn't great and I noticed a fair amount of crud appeared to be the oil.

I can only assume that there was a blockage of sorts and the dirty oil was bypassing the filter. Anyway off it came, new oil change witha fram and no problems. Could have just been bad luck, but seems a bit of a coincidence.

I currently have a Purolator filter which I got from www.opieoils.co.uk when I ordered my Fuchs Titan oil from them. Very cheap, and good service from Opie.

Fram filter ph5552 is what i use with Lucas oil 0w30 racing.

I have no problems with fram as they are One of VW main suppliers with Mann-hummel and mahle all are german made, all are the best you can buy.

Indeed Fram make excellent oil and air filters. I have had at least 3 cars running fine and all of them made very high mileages on the fram filters and decent oil.

IMHO, you are fine with the aftermarket filters if you buy a big name like fram, mann etc. Don't buy the economy brands and you should have no problems. To give an example, you can get up a full set of octy brakes for about £200 ish at the dealers and about £150 at an independant. They are exactly the same parts, eg pagid pads and brembro disks, or mintex anll round (Owned by TMD who own pagid), as the originals and are made to at least OEM spec. As always you pay for what you get, some of that will be the name on the box, eg VW, and some of it will be the quality, eg good brand OE quality vs cheap brand.
