Can it be true that an Octavia only lives 5 years

Featured Replies

Hi all

Well today saw the end to my love affair with my Octavia.....

After the minor problems i have been having with her, cutting out for no reason and the occasional revving also for no apparent reason, she went into the Skoda dealership to see if they could make her better.

Then came the phone call that I did not expect!!!!!!!!

Unfortunatly your car has so many things coming up on the diagnostics, that it is not worth repairing... oh and by the way we have taken the liberty to talk to our sales team to see what they can do on a trade in for you...Hmmmmm

Oh my goodness, I need a car for my work ... so we talk to the sales team who say that if i buy a very expensive ex demo octavia (on finace) then they can give me

Robbin' barstewards is a phrase that springs to mind - it's got to be worth taking it to an independent to get it fixed up.

Whats the Mileage, sounds like it needs to go to another dealer. There are many many much older octavia's on the road.

Maybe they know whats wrong with it and how to fix it. They could make a good profit buying it from you for £500 and selling for £4-5K.

thanks guys for your support, as i thought i may have been imagining this..................... so has anyone got any suggestions as to who i should get to look at it

:(

Sounds like rip off city take it to another dealer or a vw indipendent and see that thay say

oh i meant to say.... milage is 59k

Anyone in your area from on here that has vag-com? at least you'll know what the faults are then and maybe sort it with parts from breakers etc....?

sounds like a complete rip off, get it in writing from them and take the car to a different dealer then make a formal complaint to skoda UK about it.

even if it needed a new engine you could pick up a 2nd hand one for about a grand.

what model is it btw?

Get a breakdown of everything that they reckons needs doing, and how much they are quoting to get it each item fixed.

From this, hopefully you should then be able to shrink the list to just the necessities - this will leave you with what should be a roadworthy car.

From the necessities, you should then be able to break it down into stuff you'd rather have a dealer doing (anything specialist, etc.), and anything else that you think is overpriced you can get any reputable mechanic to do.

You can then get the "non-essential" stuff sorted as and when.

I don't think the dealer has necessarily acted in the wrong way - to deliver good comprehensive service, they're going to highlight everything which needs to doing on the car to keep it "perfect"...

I wish i knew, who had VAG-COM in my area, i would love to know what really is wrong with it!!

Whose the Dealer?

  • Author

Well the model is a 1.6i GLX

and i need to find somebody to get VAG-COM on it and find out the list of what needs really doing

The dealer concerned is Saunder Abbott at Sidcup

Is the car actually driveable, just not very well I take it?

Try a Pm to roo lives over essex, has a vag com not sure if he has Octavia codes.

The dealer should provide you with details of the diagnostic outcome - otherwise how would you know what you're paying for them to fix?

FWIW, my 1.6 had the cutting out and mad-revving problem, was the crank position sensor and was fixed for less than

What a load of crock

Its probably a couple sensors or maybe a relay intermitently faultering.

Dealers and most garage staff these days dont seem to apply a commonsense approach. This maybe due to their poor mechanical/diagnostics skills. Another one of those computer says no moments.

Find a traditional experienced electrical engineer (bosch service agent),maybe the best and most economical way for you to keep the car

Good luck

Ok so the dealership did give us some of the many things that needed doing (according to them)

Head gasket (apparently leaking, but we cant see it)

Throttle body problems

gear box actuator

temperature sensor

probe

CPU

2 additional sensors

VAG-COM was showing power loss (hard to believe as i can still take most cars away from the lights)

however they did fit 2 new filters for which they charged us

Take it an independant garage.

- Is your gear box notchy? If not don't bother with that one

- What is up with the CPU (I assume they mean ECU), can probably get one from a breakers anyway.

- Throttle body not sure but a lot of people o n here know about that.

- Which probe is it, again probably available from a breakers or a pettern part.

- Sensors , which ones. A MAF can often be easily cleaned (Search on here for cleaning MAF) and is really easy to change with a screwdriver and a mole wrench or similar (eg 5 minutes tops). Some sensors can be picked up from the breakers too but their condition wopuld be unknown..

- Head gasket, check the oil and coolant tanks. If there is something that looks like mayonase in there then it's most likely leaking, if not then the leak must b v small. An independant can do a head gasket, but if they do make sure they use new stretch bolts to put the engine back in (or it may drop out).

Which filters did they do for £40 air and pollen, and if the car is that knackered then why did they bother?

Hope that helps and good luck. There are plenty of octys running around as taxis with over 300k miles on them, so I am sure your isn't a dead one at 5 years and 60k

Deffo independant checkover & probably fix, I'd be surprised if it turned out too bad. Hope not anyway :)

the problem with some main dealers is they have no old school mecanics and they are soley relying on the computer software.go somwhere and find a garage where they have oily hands and they smoke roll ups.

:iagree:

I took my MK4 Astra to Vauxhall once because the cabin ventilation fan motor was squealing. The computer told them it was the switch - so they changed it

I go tin the car to come home and tried the fan. It squealed like mad.

Needless to say I wasnt very happy, especially after 5 more trips to the garage to fix iother problems they'd given the car whilst changing the switch.

Not sure if you could pull it off but assuming you have a full main dealer service history it might be worth talking to trading standards as a car with that many faults at only 5 years old and under 60k (which is the usual warranty limit) is clearly not fit for purpose.

Well its an automatic gearbox, so it feels slightly laboured changing gear.

But i have to say that since coming out of the garage she is driving ok and i really am confused.

I am going to get it looked at by a proper mechanic and see what they say.

thanks for all your advice on here, i would be lost without this website.

Foolishly, because i need a reliable car for my job, i have agreed to buy a 1 year old fabia from the garage, and am picking it up tomorrow, so now i am the proud owner of 2 skoda's

and i hope to get octi well again and send her to a new home to be loved.

any offers considered!!!!!

:)
