95 - 98 RON & Fuel Brands?

Featured Replies

Different engine ;)

I dont think its possible to get 400 miles from a 1.8T FWD Octavia. You can get very close but I'll eat my shoes if anyone can prove it is possible.

I managed it in my old Golf 1.8T which is very similar.

Didn't notice any diff between 95 and 98 in my last motor (Mk1 vRS, untouched). Regularly switched to see if I could feel any performance difference but never did.

Never tried supermarket gear, probably 95% of fill-ups went to Esso and Shell. Also never measured mileage so have no idea if that was affected.

Unhelpful, eh. :D

When I made the trek down too Jabba I got 430 miles with relative ease, the trip back was a little different

Do any of the Octavias have active Knock? If not (and the car hasn't been remapped) then there would be no advantage in going for a higher ron fuel. The only benifit might be in the additive used in the higher Ron fuel.

Yes they do.

The 180bhp engine is mapped and specc'd for 98RON fuel, hence the noticeable drop in performance on 95

Standard 1.8T's are mapped for 95ron and can only retard timing from this setting not increase it.

i use teco super unleaded somtimes, and the car feels a lot more responsive. in tesco at havant it's onlt 95.9p per litre at the moment.

Shame their diesel is a lot pants there at the moment.

Who knows why but it's really smokey and just feels a bit urrggh

My car has managed 451 miles on 60.81 litres of Optimax. That works out at 33.70mpg - which isn't anything special.

Maybe why I never noticed a performance difference. Baffled, I am, at the claims of appreciable difference between 95 and super.

AFAIK "standard" 150bhp 1.8T's are mapped and specc'd for 95Ron fuel, so differences 'should' be negligible at best. The 180bhp version however is mapped for 98RON , so will see a performance hit with 95.
