95 - 98 RON & Fuel Brands?

Featured Replies

Are people finding 98 Ron Fuel any better than 95 in there motors ?

Do you notice a difference in brands to (eg Shell optimax) ?

Hello, I only ever use the BP Ultimate Diesel as i've noticed a large difference in the performance against standard fuels. Much better response, less soot, and more ecconomical.

Takes a couple of tanks to get the full difference but IMO its well worth the extra pennies.

on the 180bhp vRS you will notice a distinct and instant difference, well at least I do in mine, going from 95 to 97/98.

Yep, 97/98RON fuels are definitely better, both on performance and economy.

I get an extra 50km per tank when I use "proper" petrol. :)

Trouble is, 98 is harder to find here, standard fuel is 91, and they call 95 super, or ultra :P

Sorry to name drop but ofcourse, Shell Optimax (ron 98) if you look on the inside petrol cap of a Vrs Octy is tells you 'RON 98'.

Mine is remapped too, it runs like a pig on normal ron 95 now. I have to keep using Optimax, suits me... :)

filled it to the brim with esso's super 98 Ron today. 106.9p a litre. £51.76 in total. We will see if the octy runs any better now.

here in Sweden we have shell v-power 99,i use it all the time.i think my car runs better then whith 95 (and its a standard 150bhp 1,8t so far)

Can't go wrong with Shell Optimax :D Also heard some good things about Tesco 99 RON for those who want to build up their Clubcard points!

No difference, imho, between the diesels though :D

Chris

i regularly use BP ultimate in my octy VRS but the other day had no choice to use morrisons standard 95 ron and i noticed a definate drop in economy with the basic stuff.

I find mine a lot more responsive on Optimax or Ultimate. Not sure on economy but performance is undoubtedly better.

106.9p a litre.

'Rubbery ell', ain't you got a Sainsbury's near you?

Sainsbury's 97 super unleaded is good value; currently paying 96.9p/litre in Leicester.

I tried Tesco 99 RON in my remapped 1.8T Elegance. I can't really say I noticed a difference in performance but I did notice the car was less happy with this as opposed to 95 RON.

I have tried Esso's high octane fuel and noticed a difference but not enough to warrant a change to this.

Shell's 95 RON and Optimax give superior performance to the other brands I've tried

Previous Post.

Update.

Been running Esso's 98 Ron for a few days now, think its got rid of all the old juice in it.

Think i can feel a bit of difference in the performance, but that maybe just knowing im using 98 Ron, that im thinking that.

Fuel gauge hasnt move in the past few days from full and done 65 miles.

I Will let you know what i get from a full tank.

Got 264 miles from morrisions 95 Ron on previous fill up.

what grade of fuel is your remap configured for? if it's mapped to accomodate 95RON fuel specifically then it's unlikely 97/98 will make a heap of difference as the ignition map settings will be conservative to account for the lower octane rating, however if it's mapped for 97/98 fuel then there WILL be a noticeable difference if the map is any good.

Mine's mapped to make the most of whatever octane is put in the tank, hasn't everybody been given this option?

half a tank used and 194 miles on the clock, but done a few motorway runs since fill up. taking it very easy aswell.

264 miles hit today, that beats the previous full fill up of 95 RON. still 2/3rds of a tank left to, but a couple of motorway runs more than usual to. averaged 45.3 mpg on one run.

My unmapped Octy vRS only gets 97+, but I can't say I've noticed any difference between the various brands (including the supermarket stuff).

I always assumed that it all came out of the same big tank at the fuel depot anyway...

Skoda recommend 97 or better for the vRS, that's enough reason for me.

This may be of interest. Logged with VAG-COM on a custom Jabba mapped Octavia 1.8T. The map was done on Shell "normal" unleaded as I diddnt want to have to use Optimax etc.

well my mapped (for 97 ron) octy vrs went in for gearbox work and skoda put fuel in it (95) made a right mess of the performance so put octane booster in then optimax and its 10 times better now could'nt belive the drop in performance the 95 made over the optimax i religiously put in it

fuel light came on just on the way back from work. 328 miles in total.

328 miles? Isn't that very little? I have not managed 400 miles yet but have been very close several times. That's on cheapest Sainsbury's with a 2.0 petrol X reg. No motorways but no stop'n go either.

Different engine ;)

I dont think its possible to get 400 miles from a 1.8T FWD Octavia. You can get very close but I'll eat my shoes if anyone can prove it is possible.

Get munching, my son :D:D:D

Got 440 miles on a tankful of Irish 95 octane on holiday. Averaged 44.5 mpg :thumbup:
