Unable to connect to some internet sites

Featured Replies

I have an annoying problem on my PC.

Installed a new Ethernet card (Belkin Gigabyte PCI card) following the failure of the Ethernet port on the motherboard. All seemed well but I then found I could not connect to certain sites - all of the microsoft sites for a start, yet I can connect to other sites.

I have disabled the built in network card in device manager.

It appears to be resolving the names correctly but then does not reach the actual destination:

I know it's not a problem with my ISP as I can connect to the same sites when on another PC connected to the same modem wirelessly.

Any ideas why this is happening anyone?

I don't think the 'Request Timed Out' in the tracert is a symptom of the problem...not all devices in the route will respond to a ping.

I get a similar response - although the timing out doesn't start until hop 12 and then nothing seems to respond right out to 30 hops, but I can still access the address in my browser.

Have you tried a different browser?

Good point but for some reason IE does time out trying to connect to certain sites.

No I haven't tried a different browser, any recommendations, are they available for free download?

Cheers

Firefox is a good one

 wouldn't touch IE with a barge pole TBH.

disable the old NIC in the BIOS so it doesn't appear in windows, and make sure the ethernet item is correctly set up and you should be ok hopefully. Make sure you have the lasest driver for the new ethernet card too.

Regarding traceroute, no a lot of routers etc don't respond to ping so will not show up on a traceroute as anything but another hop. The time out isn't something you should see that often, if you get it i would see if the trace completes rather than quiting it witl Ctrl C.

hhmm... might be worth flushing out the dns cache..

Start -> Run -> cmd

ipconfig /flushdns

Thanks, have already tried flushing the DNS cache with no joy.

I have looked on Belkin's website but can't find a newer version of the driver.

I'll try a different browser and see what happens.

Regards.

:thumbdwn: Still no joy, I disabled the built in Ethernet in BIOS nothing now showing in device manager and re-installed the new card. Downloaded Firefox and tried but have the same poblem.

Status displays 'Waiting for uk.msn.com...' then times out after a couple of minutes.

Tried turning the firewall off too but this made no difference.

has your router got the most current firmware?

It could be a dodgy router.and sounds like for some reason you are not getting timly replies. I'd be looking at the router rather than the PC if i were you since you have the most current drivers and the problem is shown in IE and FF
