crazing glass

Featured Replies

I am wondering if anyone else on here has had this problem.

my dad has an mark 1 octavia estate which yesterday one of the rear glass windows over the load area crazed. the glass looks like it has gone form inside and the glass is bending out.

now before we have XXXXX put the replacement one in on the insurance I just want to make that we do what is needed to stop it happening again.

the only thought we can come up with is that there was a defect in the glass and that a number of things have come together to cause it!

we know that it was not hit becase we could see the car all the time when it happened!

any thoughts would be appreciated

I had a windscreen in a car just suddenly crack right across for no reason apparant reason. I was cleaning the car next to it on the drive when it happened.

When the new one was fitted they put a new seal in. They guy fitting said that it looked like what had happened was that the old seal had a little bit of something solid trapped in the rubber. With the extreme heat at the time, the glass had expanded and when it got to this hard bit it expanded at different rates and split the screen.

Our Octavia estate gets used and abused with all manner of things loaded in the back that bang the windows. Bengie's estate has 4 gazillion watt speakers in the boot - neither of which have cause failure of a window.

I'd say it is very unlikely to happen again.

Check your policy Iain; most policies these days separate glass cover from the rest of the policy, so you might have to pay an excess, but it won't affect your premium or NCD.
