I've just bought some rubber from these guys. The Octy usually comes with 205 55 R17's, but I found that if I searched on 205 50 R17's then the price came down considerably.

I'm not the consumate follower of fashion when it comes to tyres, so I found some TNG Star Performer W rated tyres for just over

octy should be 205/50/17 or 225/45/17

never heard of TNG stars so a review would be useful!

As the baron says, standard is 205/50 17 anyway.

As for the tyres, lets hope they grip better than the Nankang Supergrippas I had on my old escort, if it had rained within a 200 mile radius of where I was the car wiould slide all over the place.

Always re-assuring that people look for bargain tyres to fit to their "high performance" cars........

I just got rid of some kingstars that were just like that....but learnt all about driving on ice without the ice  :thumbdwn:

put some michelin pilot sport 225 45 zr 17 on and the difference is amazing, quiet and so far very good grip even in the wet.....the bad side ....£465 for four tyres

I liked the Hankook Ventus I got from them. I did some research on them and they seemed to get good reviews from folk who used them. And I was well happy with them.

I bought some cheap Marangoni Zetas for the Escort last week, look like propper racing tyres. Dont seem to bother the Escort to much, they seem to regin in the awesome 90ish bhp.

Just thinking the same.... considering the tyres are the only things connecting a car to the road it amazes me that people couldn't give a toss if they good or not..... as long as they're cheap..... I suppose they could put the money they saved to a nice coffin....

Its usually people who dont know about tyres that this applies to. Not that they 'don't give a toss'!!

For me a good compromise between safety, performance in wet and dry, long life and cost is the way to go.

ALWAYS do some research first before you buy!!

Good point! :o:thumbup: I retract my original statement. ;)

Have to admit toyo's are far off that price.....

I've tried to look for some reviews of these tyres but guess what....

I don't know owt about tyres other than they are made from rubber and have plycord inside somewhere, and the minimum tread depth is 3mm across 2/3 of the surface of the tyre.

These ones I've ordered are W rated up to 168MPH and are classed as Ultra High performance. We will see.

min tread depth is 1.6mm

and the minimum tread must be across 3/4 not 2/3. ;)

OK, I don't know anything at all about tyres. Thanks for that chaps.

and the full circumference of the tyre:thumbup:

OK, the tyres were delivered today. The worst thing about them is that they look like tractor tyres on the Octy. I should have gone for the 45 profile instead of the 50.

We had the benefit of a torrential downpour as the tryes were being fitted, and they are pretty slippy in the wet. Lots of ASR light flashing on and off as I burried my right foot into the carpet.

They offer more protection for the rims than the Cobntinentals as they have a bit of a convex profile. The tread pattern is similar to yon fashionable 'V' pattern favoured by the fashionable brands.

When the roads dried off there was tons of grip. High speeds felt just as stable as ever and over all, I would say they were better than Khomo Ecstas.

At first I thought that the tyres didn't have a tread depth indicator fitted, then I realised that the tread is so deep that it's quite hard to actually see the TDI.

They are made in China and are rather rough, but on the whole I give them the thumbs up.

Will be itnerestign to see how evenly they wear and also to hear your views after they've had a thousand miles to scrub in.

I just been down to Essex and had a little "incident" with the Chinese tyres. The M1 weas blocked for a change so took a shortcut through Rotherham. Turned off East Bawtry Road towards Treeton and rounded a hairpin in the wet, and for the first time ever, the back end of the octy spun out and I lost alll grip on the road surface.

there was much spinning of the steering wheel and dancing on the pedals and I managed to regain control after crossing onto the French side of the road. It was a proper shocker I tell thee.

I took it very steady for the rest of the journey and even went below the speed limit when it was raining. I got some dry surface driving in daaaaahrn saaaaaahrf and managed to scrub whatever waxy film was covering the surface of the tryres off. came back home in torrential downpour and didn't have any issues really.

It was quite scary to spin the car at low speed, although there was extra weight of luggage in the boot.

So to update, high speed motorway driving is excellent and very stable. Road Noise is louder than Khumo's. Dry grip is still very good. Steering feels lighter, though I did have a couple of slow punctures in me old front tyres. Ride is harsher (refer to slow puncture entry though)

Still a thumbs up, but need to be very carefully run in.

Blinking flip  That's madness!!!! I was a bit sceptical about the fuldas I have for my rears (thought I was going to be needing a tyre change asap, even though they are new!!!) But they have never missed a beat in the rain  Tried getting the *** out, but they where damn grippy.
