Green Filter discolouration

Featured Replies

Only done 8k with this filter fitted. Just got round to cleaning it today and it was filthy. Loads of flies and bits of rubbish.

What I did notice was the mesh in several places is 'rusted' in colour and after washing it (using the green cleaning kit) it looks like this.

Anyone have the reason for this ?

Cheers , Jon. :)

it's just corrosion isn't it????

did you re-oil the filter before refitting it to your car?

I will re - oil it when it's dry (of course) but is this corrosion normal ?

Could be radio active Jon. Wash your hands well afterwards wont you!!

I'll look at mine when I get back from my 'jollies'

well it's only mild steel, so your lucky the whole thing hasn't completely rotted away sat there in that warm moist airbox.

Mine did it the week I put it in but hasn't got any worse since. I presume a bit of water went up there. It happens.

no rust on mine when i checked it last week , didn't need washing either , just knocked out the muck and gave it a quick blow with the air line at work , i think maybe you had a filter that hadn't been oiled properly from the factory ,therefore water on unoiled mild steel will cause rust

if you get water in there you're in serious trouble!!! it's probably just fuel vapours that have done it.

normally those little mesh bits are annodized but they occasionally 'miss' little bits, for some models like the cossie's the mesh part is stainless so it dosn't rust.

I might be barking up the wrong tree but wouldnt this be about the area the recirc valve would vent onto? Could be linked to just hot gas?

I have seen water in the box but this could have been condensation. Had a PD 100 Golf that took on a lot of water in heavy rain soaking the filter and buggering the MAF. I wasn't surprised when this happened to the filter in the Fabia despite the correct oiling being undertaken prior to fitting. The MAF in the Fabia however seems to have been ok with it, no fault codes and good performance.

Ill be honest I tend to hoover mine every 5k and bin at 20k! This is because when ever I tired cleaning it I usually bugger the maf!
