Rear Fog Lights

Featured Replies

Hi,

I would like to wire up for both rear fog lights to work. On my mk3 Gti this was a relatively easy task, (Punch out the blanking plate and fit the bulb.). Not so on my vRS!

Any ideas on how to do this???

Cheers :scratchch

Yup, there is a guide in the FAQ I believe.

Anyone able to tell me where to get the right sort of connecter to fit INSIDE the black connector blocks?

I got some from my local Auto Electrical Dealer. Unfortunately Maplins does not stock the connectors and the ones listed in ETKa come with a wire attached for wiring loom repairs.

I got an old wiring loom from my dealer...the service guys had one in the workshop....just removed one of the connectors.

Cost me nothing other than being polite. ;)

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, here, but is it a good idea to fit the second rear fog light?

I've thought about this quite a bit; the system is set up for both right and/or left reversing lamps, and both work. It's also set up for right and/or left rear fog lamps, but only one works. Do you think this is a deliberate safety measure?

If you only have an offside foglamp bulb, and it fails, you're no worse off than having no foglamps at all. If you have two foglamp bulbs, and the offside one fails, then you might - just possibly - look like a motorbike hugging the nearside to a vehicle behind. Imagine what would happen if they try to overtake this "motorbike" ...

I have to say I agree, plus when you only have one fog light, it is obvious when you brake, because both sides light up, whereas with two lights you run a serious risk of obscuring the brake lights.

Things become worse (and this isn't directed at anyone here, just a general observation) when the rear fogs are left on when there is no fog - dazzling effect AND masked brake lights.

Fitting 2 rear foglights gives a degree of redundancy if one fails: there will still be one to see. That is inherently safer than having none to see when visibility is seriously reduced in fog. I speak from experience of having been driving for years before foglights became a legal requirement, and in the sort of pea-souper fog we rarely see now since the advent of smokeless solid fuels etc.

personally i would like to see motor manufacturers putting fog lamps in the middle of the car well away from the lamp clusters because it's very difficult to see brake lights when staring at fog lights as well.

Much like peugeot do on the 206. I allways thought it was a good idea.

Alot of cars though do come with two fog lights, Vauxhall do on the Astra and Vectra.

Just for info: In Germany it is only legal to have one rear fog light precisely because of possible confusion with brake lights. I presume that this is why all VAG sourced cars have one light only with the nearside blanked off. Even top of the range Mercs. have one rear fog light with the other one disabled. A friend with a 320 asked the dealer to make both fogs work but was refused because

" it isn't MB's policy to carry out unauthorised modifications".

New VAG cars fog lights can only work if the lights are on and by turning off the headlights so are the fogs (all work off the same switch). Good idea.

Toyota also has fogs lights which cancel when the headlights are turned off (seaprate fog and headlight switches).

Why don't all manufacturers have such cancelling systems?

Also why do some manufacturers have the indicators right next to the headlamps.....makes it dam near impossible to see when someones indicating.

Didn't think for one moment there would be such excitement!

It peeves me slightly in that having had a Rover and a Vauxhall where the rear fogs are enabled on both sides. I then made the move up the quality path with firstly a VW Goof and now my vRS, that niether followed the same route as previous cars.

I appreciate the comments regarding motorbikes (being a motorcyclist does give me another view), I want to improve the safety aspects of my fine motor car. The other consideration is that I do drive in Europe, so my current layout is not going to help whereas the change will be a great improvement.

:fart:

The Audi I bought duty free in W Germany in 1980 had two foglights factory-fitted which enabled me to use them legally in W Germay and the UK. Having one rear foglight fitted means that UK drivers can't use their rear foglight on the Continent, nor Continental drivers in the UK. That's not very clever or useful. :(

Also why do some manufacturers have the indicators right next to the headlamps.....makes it dam near impossible to see when someones indicating.

Total agreement - many, many cars are have the front indicator as part of the headlight unit (Renault, Peugeot, VW, Ford) to name a few off the top of my head). As you say, when headlights are on you can't guess if they are intent on turning if your waiting to pull out of a junction. But then again I was always told not to rely on the indicator and wait for the person to slow down and look like they are intent on turning.

You can of course just wedge the bare end of the wire in place when you push the blocks back together ......... so far so good :D
