1998 Octavia GLXI 1.6

Featured Replies

Sister has found a silver GLXi 1.6 octavia estate, 50,000miles -

There was a 75hp version of the 1.6. Can't remember if this was just in the LX, or whether it was only not in the SLX.

Rob.

that is similar to my one engine is IIRC the 102 bhp version fuel economy round town for me is 28 to 32mpg on a run up to 43/44mpg and is insurance group 7.Glxi is one down from SLXI but you get a good amount of toys.Factor in cost of cambelt replacement if not already been done. Other than that they are great little cars

Yes, Rob, lower powered 1.6 was in LXi, GLXI has the higher of the two. Identical to yours at 102bhp? 8v?

When is the cambelt change due? cost?

Yes and yes...though why anyone would want to buy a heavy car with a 1.6... :haha:

102bhp and 8v IIRC

(ooops rob got there first :) )

 she is used to a 1.4 Astra, I'm sure it will be adequate.

Only the LX had the 75bhp engine (ie what I have). The GLX had a 101 bhp engine verysimilar to the current 1.6 in the Classic. The GLX however has a few other differences from current models, ie no rear wiper and will have some features found only in the highest spec current models (but at the same time other features missing that you would find in the current mid spec model).

As for heavy cars with a 1.6, even the 75bhp engine is more than adequate in the Octavia due to Skod fitting different gear ratios with each engine to allow good performance in all models at any legal speed. My old 75 bhp engine pulls my Octy at 90mph up the steep hill on the M2 out of Belfast and up into the Antrim hills with out any problem, leaving many a fancier mark of car in its dust.

oi rob nowt wrong with the 1.6 in the octy estate :(

the spec is higher in the GLXI than the current comfort :haha:

Pretty certain all mk1 estates had a rear wiper, mk1 hatches didn't?

Sorry missed that it is an estate!

I have a 99 MY GLX 1.6 hatch, owned from new Also 50,000 miles. Nothing major has gone wrong. Front brake pads only just renewed - everything else still original.- except the tyres fronts lasted 35k, rears 40k. Overall fuel economy is around 38mpg - up to 45 on a run.

Check to see if the brake servo works OK. Apparently there is a known fault with the hoses cracking - you suddenly find the pedal goes very heavy.

Car has its fair share of rattles now the miles are building up, but nothing I can't live with.

Still goes well, in fact has got better as the engine loosened up. Would easily do illegal speeds(not that I ever do)

Thanks, does anyone know when the cambelt change is due, and what it may cost? Is it an easy job on that engine - I assume there is quite a bit of space around it? (thats not a dig - genuine question!! :D)

cambelt is IIRC 60,000 not sure how much i got mine changed as part of the sale

This is the car - full dealer serv history...

media?id=59098350

Would have expected GLXI to have body coloured handles, roof rails, and poss alloys (parkers I think stated it had alloys)...

Is this correct - not a lower model with a different badge?? :D

Do a check up on the reg if you know it...cheapest way is to run a quote through on Direct Line or similar with the reg and it'll tell you what car it is...

If you can sell 'em, then sell 'em...I am interested but while I haven't got the money for them there's no reason why you should hold onto them... :)

Rob.

sorry rob no offence meant :ashamed:

LOL...didn't think there was any! Seriously...if I had the money, I'd buy 'em, but I haven't and I can't guarantee when I will. In which case, it's not fair on you to not sell them to people who can provide a more definite promise... :)

Rob.

you mentioned something in this thread that i might be interested in with a little on top i could do a deal????

Long time viewer - first time post... apologies in advance.

I had a 98' silver GLXi estate for 2 years before selling it last Sept because of option to get a company car.

As for running it, no problems at all really, air bag conductive copper band thing caused a faulty warning light last summer, moisture in throttle body caused eratic idling of engine and some hair raising breaking as the engine and break assit died at junctions (apparently moisture in 1.6 engines was a common occurance according to reputable Skoda garage)

Spec as I remeber was ABS, PAS, 4x EW, Air con, no roof rails or alloys. In fact the picture you posted could have been my car, if its upgraded with remote central locking and alarm, comes with 6cd in boot and has play dough stain on rear seet it probably is!

As its my first post I'd like to commit to Black is better than Red and yellow, the estates better than the hatch, 4x4 better than RS???? now theres a question I'd like to have the experience to answer.

Cheers ears
