1998 Octavia GLXI 1.6

Featured Replies

I have a Y reg Mondeo Ghia Est. Not the vRS estate I really wanted, but it was a very good deal and (sigh) sometimes you have to think with your head not your heart.

I will attempt to bring this post back to the subject, comparing the Octavia against my new(ish) Mondeo,

Mondeo - quicker 2ltr 0-60 10 ish secs. 1.6 GLXi 12.5ish secs.

Boot - We estate owners like to talk about our boot space - Mondeo is wider and shallower than the Octavia (I now have to think about packing things where they were just flung in before).

Ride - Octavia not as flat (ok it wasn't an RS) than the Mondeo going around the bends, No difference on the flat.

MPG, the Mondeo is lucky to get over 31mpg on a long 70mph cruise. Octavia never really below 36mpg.

Quality, older Octy definitely better!

Safety, lost count of the Mondeo's airbags (6 I think) over the Octy's erm... 2.

When I was selling last year I found that there was a lot of other newer cheaper cars to buy than my Octy the likes of mondeos, 406's, vectra's etc. In fact I think that the Octy holds it's value surprisingly well, erm.. as long as you are lucky enough to find a buyer that is.

Apologies if I rambling, still getting used to posting, haven't mastered it yet.

moisture in throttle body caused eratic idling of engine and some hair raising breaking as the engine and break assit died at junctions (apparently moisture in 1.6 engines was a common occurance according to reputable Skoda garage)

Interesting my 1.6 Octavia is having exactly the same problems at moment! Dealer said it was a lambda probe fault but that did not fix it, now it is back in the garage.

I took mine to the dealer at 5pm one Wednesday evening and I watched the mechanic take the throttle body off, clean it, put it back, reset memory etc - and it worked fine.

I wasn't billed for replacement parts and because I watched him do it (well in between sitting in vRS's and Superbs that is) I do know that there was a lot of moisture (speckles of brown water) in there, as he showed it me before and after cleaning it.

Maybe changing the Lambda probe wasn't enough as the dirts still in there and just covered the replacement after it was put in, or it may not be the same fault, but hopefully now your cars back in they will get it fixed for you.

PS, Thanks for the welcome DGW.

Just to say, I bought the car & so far am v. happy with it.
