Potential Service Problems

Featured Replies

 I know the fixed/variable service thing has been mentioned quite a lot but I have a new scenerio for you. Bought new Octavia 1.9pd (105bhp) about nine months a go and it set on fixed service. I didn't think I'd be using it for work much so we left it on fixed. Anyway started to do excess miles and had it serviced at 10000 miles and asked for a long life service and for it to be put back on variable. After it came back from dealers I checked the service interval and on the trip meter and it said 9300 miles left before service so it went back in to have the computer reset. It's now done 19000 miles and the spanner has started flashing for another service. I know the lower limit for a variable service is about 9k miles but has anyone ever achieved this lower limit. The car is driven mainly on motorways between 70-80mph and not thrashed at all. I managed to get 18k on my old vrs before that needed a service and that was thrashed within an inch of it's life. It's going to ths stealers later on in the week but he's already mentioned oil quality etc.

Has anyone any thoughts ??

Just done a search and I think I've answered my own question. I reckon in checking the service interval on the dash I reset the service interval to fixed - What a numpty I am.

It will still be interesting to see if the dealer tries to convice me I need another service , can they detect things like this by plugging the computer in ?

Yup I did that. It's easily done when checking when the the next service is due.

Went to stealers who assured me it need a service as it was set up on the long life service which is 9800 miles or two years. They reckon there are three services standard (10k 1 year) long life (9.8k 2 years) or variable. Engine is 1.9pd car is 9 months old. Can some tech people advise me because I've got a distinct feeling I'm having my plonker pulled

If I am then this will be the end of my association with Skoda as this will be the second time the stealer has tried to con me

Long life is variable.

There are three different schedules.

QG0 - Fixed - 10,000 miles / 1 year (but on the Octavia 2 the inspection is still 2 years even on fixed, 1 year is just an oil and filter change)

QG1 - Variable - min 9,800miles, max 20-30,000 miles depending on engine or 2 years

QG2 - Extended servicing (Dont think this is used in the UK).

I wasn't going to go public on this it but it appears my dealer is talking footBALLS. I have been charged for QG1 service and either one of these two things has happened 1 they havn't serviced it at 10k and charged me for the privelage or 2 they have carried out a fixed service and charged me for a variable. Either way I have been ripped off again. Well this is the final straw the octi 2 will be serviced on Thursday and then sold. Moto of the story "Skoda Dealers - To big For their Boots with their new fancy dealerships guess they have to pay for them somehow!"

I'm currently well peeved about this

Maybe they did a variable but didnt set the light correctly?

Could be but they are insistant on the car needing another service. I've just got the bill out for the last one which was £164.74 including 4.5 L of Longlife oil (5061). I even sent the car back in after the service because the service indicator said 9800 miles and they said that this is the norm. Something is wrong somewhere and I don't know what apart from the possibility of the two scenerios I mentioned earlier

I've just had a right arguement with the dealers regarding the servicing. I took my original bill in from when the car was serviced at 10k which clearly shows that I have been invoiced for a variable service and clearly identies that the car needs to be re-set to variable. I showed this to the service manager who said that I did have a variable service but that they are only getting 9.3k miles from the variable service. This is contry to what I was told last time when I wes told the car was set up for extended service not variable. They are blatently ripping me off the car has just done 20k is 10 months old and will now be in for it's second variable service FFS why are these dealers doing this

can somebody please advise as to whats going on I'm getting realy f***ing frustrated with this now:mad:

Well my octy2 tdi is on 14k miles, and has not had any service yet. Acording to my dealer its not due until around 20-30K miles or august 2007. I would hazard a guess and say something wasnt done at the last service. I wonder if someone local to you has vag-com who can check if QG1 has been set on the ecu as by the sounds of it, it has not been done.

I think your right mannyo but they won't admit it and are charging me for another service - they other option is that I reset it to fixed when I was messing around with the trip reset button thingy - but once again they have assured me I can't have done this

One things for certain after the latest developements they have lost my business and my inlaws businsess which together totals 4 new cars in three years (approx £45k) and all associated servicing

When I talked to my service manager [not a main dealer] about which interval/oil I should use [petrol car under 9K a year] he laughed at the long life stuff - said, yes, they changed it at over 20K but it, and the inside of the engine, looked like crap. I'm staying with once a year, semi-synthetic and a manager who [i think] tells it like it is.

I' don't mind have the car serviced at 10k which would be twice a year for me but what I do object to is been charged for something that hasn't been done like long life oil that only lasts 10k miles

Thought the whole [and only] point of long life oil [a top-up litre I bought at 5000 cost me

Would have thought that long life oil meant it was slower to degrade, but will still get the same amount of carp in it as any other oil especially over time. IMO the only time I would go on to a variable service would be if I was doiing 1000's of miles a week to avoid servicing once a month. For lower mileages 10 20,000 a year then IMO an oil change every 10,000 is no bad thing especially deisal, and the better the oil the kinder it will be to the engine internals. Remember not so long ago (well 25 years ) When dad got a peugot deisal, did about 25,000 miles a year and car had to be serviced every 5000 miles.

Have been following this thread with interest. My March 06 OctyII is on a variable service and has now done 11,500 miles and we have had to top it up and have just used the last bit of the litre of longlife oil we bought to do so because yesterday the orange low level oil warning light came on when i was driving home from work.

Listening to everyone on here makes me wonder if I am doing the correct thing being on variable service. I thought it would be good because my skoda garage is some distance from me so having to take the car there less would be an advantage but I wouldn't like to think it was at cost to my engine. I do about 20,000 each year does anyone have any advice on which type of service would be best?

Topping up the oil wont effect the longlife schedule.

My garage gave me OW/30 Castrol SLX longlife II, looking at the list given at the top of this OCTY thread it's not on there, can anyone tell me if they gave me the correct oil to top up for a variable service?

That's what Halfords sold me for top up - they checked it out and said it was fine.

Also they said that, for small top ups only, it isn't too critical if you put a little semi synthetic in a car filled with synthetic, and vice versa. Perhaps the techs can confirm if that is so.

Thanks for that ednmra. I really love my Octy II, its so roomy and I will hopefully be keeping it for a good few years, its so practical (and my dad's wheelchair fits into it easily), so I feel its important that I'm using the correct oil. I like my dealership but we can all make mistakes if we are in a hurry I was hoping they hadn't made a mistake in giving me that type of oil instead of the 5W-30 I have been reading about.

Well it is worth keeping a check on the right info - bear in mind mine is a 2.0FSI petrol.

The stuff they put in for my complete annual oil change was semi synthetic 10W-40 costing

My 2.0TDI has done just over 12,000 miles and it has used just over 1.5 litres of oil in that time.

I topped up with the correct grade of 5W-30 longlife oil that satisfies the VW 507 00 (I think) standard. (Or is it 504 00??):rubchin:

However, I have noticed the lower front part of the engine is oily, just below the A/C compressor so it looks like some of my oil has gone that route.

Off to the dealer with that one methinks.
