Outlook 'bug' help needed :)

Featured Replies

On my works pc I have recently had a spate of spam mail, usually just stupid ones about stocks and shares but all with funny named senders and dubious titles.

I have one sent from Rachel Crowley and the title is "seedy grab", not the nicest thing to have on your work PC, when i click on this mail to delete it i get an outlook message

"The custom form could not be opened, Office will use an office form instead" (little yellow triangle icon)

So 'ok' i think and i click the "OK" button, nothing happens and preview pane goes blank

so i press delete:

"the item could not be deleted, it was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied"

So no matter what I do I always have this showing, cannot move it, Anybody got any Ideas?

plus my inbox says it has 4 new emails, but there is only that one showing in bold

I would phone the IT boffs here, but we have a bit of a strict IT policy so trying not to draw attention to myself ;)

EDIT: Outlook 2000 and Windows 2000 Professional

try running windows in safe mode.

Then delete the email in question, right click on your inbox, and select, mark all email as read.

Reboot your machine.

Had a simular problem once, this worked.

Thanks, Tried that but no joy :(

Had a look on many net sites about it and there is are fixes but you have to run an exe, or create folders and move system files about, unfortunately my employer has this system sealed up pretty tight :(

Cant you highlight the email concerned, then go message drop down then block sender? It should delete the email and block further from them.

I can highlight the message, but will not allow me to right click on it :( keep getting the same error message

How is your mail set up - are you using an exchange server? If so you may need to delete the message from your message store - techies required if that's the case :(

Edit: To see whether you are using Exchange got Tools, Accounts and click View/Change (I think from memory) and it'll say whether it's IMAP, POP3, Exchange etc...

I suspect it will be on Exchange Server. We had a similar problem once and that involved me getting into the guts of ES - which wasn't fun. I also don't remember what I had to do :o:O:O:O

I've been getting the same sort of emails that show a different sender name and title but essentially the same content (trying to sell a dodgy money scam)

I gave up and just delete it as soon as I see them.

It sounds like the system is trying to do a full open in the preview pane and that's causing some problems, sounds silly, but have you tried deleting it with the preview pane switched off?

Yep gave that a try, a message comes up in the preview pane that it cannot open due to active content ?? and still wont work when the preview pane s closed

Have you tried Outlook in Safe mode? My knowledge of the 2000 version is a bit sketchy now, but you should be able to initiate it by hitting ctrl while clicking your desktop icon.

Then have a go deleting it, still with the preview pane turned off. Another way I've got rid of stuff like this is to search for the offending item and delete it from the returned searches window. It would seem Outlook doesn't load support for scripting etc when it returns search results etc.

Good luck

Will try that tomorrow, thanks

No probs, hope it works for you. Safe mode should do it for you TBH, as Outlook won't load any scripting add-ins or anything. I don't think it can even display emails sent in HTML or RTF formats, just plain text. And as plain text can't do any harm, you should be able to get rid :D
