This caught me out ... car "funnyisms"...

Featured Replies

Can be funny things, or things that are funny (meaning strange) about how things work. Might build up a collection here of a few common ones and maybe keep it as a sticky if it's genuinely helpful?

My daftest was probably when using a courtesy car, some while ago LOL, the interior light didn't go out after I'd locked it. I fiddled about with the switch and eventually came to the conclusion that I must not have closed the door properly. Of course, every time I opened the door it re-set the delayed timer  The garage were most helpful when I rang them :D

Next?

trying to find the damn switches for an electronically controlled driver's seat in a fairly new mundano. Ended up driving couple of miles in a most awkward position.... Then found the switches.

Generally I seem to get on OK with unfamiliar cars. Sometimes have fun looking for the petrol cap release button/lever.

on my sierra it has a factory alarm that sets via locking the drivers door. best thing is you can lock the drivers door with the front passenger door closed yet the rear doors and bootlid open. once all have been closed the alarm beeps the horn as it sets. confuses some people :D

used a works truck with a dash mounted hand brake. bloody thing.

Years ago a friend wired his starter motor through a relay via the drivers door electric window up button. A home made imobilser that was very effective but confusing if you didn't know!

anybody ever driven a renault 4?? that wierd gearchange thing in the dashboard!!!!

Bit like a Honda Civic Type R, but not anywhere near as bad. :D Think it was an old French reg'd Renault van of similar age that I had the joy of driving briefly. :D

Been caught several times in unfamilliar cars wondering how to open the fuel filler.

The first time was a Sierra, then the Octy vRS and finally a new Passat rental car last weekend.

2004 C-Class Merc Automatic!

Wheres the handbrake gone? After 10 mins trying to find it went and asked the owner where it was.

Citroen 2CV gear change.. if you know what i'm on about, enough said :)

trying to get bengie's sierra into reverse...had to leave a good 3 feet in front when i parked up at work to ensure i had enough room for all the times i was gonna move forward trying to find reverse :o

i'm also going to have to fight the urge to press a certain button whilst moving in mavis

Getting into one of works cars and trying to select reverse and kept getting first. I tried every which way possible known to mankind before running back in and getting a non driver to come out, who calmly lifted the **** (just the ****) and selected reverse for me :o

I had serious doubts about my sanity that day. Damn Corsa's

Most annoying was spending a good half an hour looking in the footwells etc trying to find the bonnet release for the Mondeo. Good old Ford and their key operated latches. :finger:

Not so much a funnyism - but I spend quite a lot of time in the rain trying to get the intermittant wipe on the front and back windows to match!

Oh, my friends Mitsi Colt (quite old), everytime I signal round a corner the wipers come on - how strange. ;)

Trying to find the fuel cap relaece on a works rover 75

turned to car upside down trying to find the button in the middle of th forecourt

was just a plain cover but was hinged about 2" in so you just push the side of it

sombody else actualy ripped the handle off the seat trying to move it when it was electric

i'm also going to have to fight the urge to press a certain button whilst moving in mavis

i'm gonna disconnect that button, bloody silly idea that.

that's something i really like about my focus. except when i want to open the bonnet with the engine running...:o and for some reason, the spare key will do everything but open the bonnet

Focus for me as well - a hire car with a silly semi-auto box. Got to my destination and could not get the key out of the ignition. Couldn't work out what to do - even got the manual out and it didn't say. Eventually noticed that it was still in 'D', moved it into 'P' et voila !!

i have a fabia vrs

a while ago i was given a nissan navara 4x4 pick up truck

lol so i was driving down the m23 in my usual aggresive manner i went to select 6th gear (but where six is on nissan is reverse) crammed it in wreked the reverse gear and nearly had a nasty accident Oops lol they made me use my own car from then on lol

When I worked at the petrol station, I remember a customer whom had just bought a new car, the fuel release was simple, push the flap, but I couldn't figure it out after he asked for my help as he couldn't see it. In the end I had to call the dealer and ask as he was too embaressed. I'm sure they design these things to be a funny for the dealers as posible.

VW passat no handbrake but a pushbutton on the dash. Very confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw a chap at the motor show sitting in an Ibiza Cupra playing with the gearstick - really trying hard to force it into reverse.

After five minutes I gave the window a tap and pointed down

He slinked off sheepishly soon after...

First time driving the Cooper S, not knowing that to go into reverse you need to tap the gear shift left twice, instead of the cool push-down left like the Skoda.

what about the smart car then?? no bloody clutch pedal and some wierd tiptronic gearstick thing!

And away from you for up and toward you for down - should be the other way round IMHO.
