Windscreen misting up badly

I have found a similar post on BRISKODA but it did not mention my cause.

I had the problem of my screen misting very badly especially after it rained, if the engine was warm the higher you turn up the heater or the fan the faster the screen would mist, only had car 1 day 99T slx Octy.

Full heat and fan speed would in less than 5 seconds turn a clean n clear screen into a frosted glass one, corner to corner.

Only the AC on icy cold would clear it, after time, about 5-10 minutes.

Thinking this just doesn't make sense,

heat = steamed up window,? Mmm steamed up window,? Mmm steam,?

heat + water = steam, Mmm, maybe I got a leaky heater matrix or something.

Any how, when I was going to show a friend the problem while waiting for engine to warm up I noticed that when fan was on full there was very little airflow through the vents my friend thinking something may have fell off under the dash to the vents as you could hear the fan spinning like mad.

He proceeded to fiddle on under the passenger side of the dash when the fan noise changed and air flow through the vents had changed to a gale force wind in comparison to before.

I had a feel under the dash and figured it's a flap, Mmm what he had pushed must be the recirculation flap me thinks, sure enough I hit the airflow recirculation button after moving the vent setting off screen and gale was back.

OK it's a blockage in the air intake, narrows it down a lot, need ta check the filter,

After not finding it under the bonnet, I figured it must be under that bit of black plastic under the wiper arm's, so I removed the wipers and the long rubber running across the engine bay and the bit's of plastic, cracked one (upon inspection rubber on the plastic edge near screen perished badly need a new one) so not to upset, mind you please let me know if there is a easy way to get that plastic off what a B*$%H.

Upon removing the plastic I was confronted by my own private lake (damn where's me welly's) joking aside there was enough water to cover over 3/4 of that little black box on the drivers side I nearly had kittens,

water + electric = Arrrg,

Upon inspection I found that if you stand facing the car from the front of the car where the water is/was, in the nearest outer corners (left n right) was a hole that was blocked by leaves n muck, and when I poked them clear the water all flowed out near the wheels,

my (now known to be a pollen filter) on the passenger side was soaking wet.

I removed the filter and friend started engine, was still warm, switched on heater n fan to full on screen and sure enough 5 seconds went by and window went frosty, saying Arr ****, N thinking my GOD doesn't a frosted screen look Bloody awesome from the outside, shame you can't see **** through it. (oh! yea it's illegal too Damn)

when no sooner had it gone frosty it started to clear real quick.

I bought a new filter the following day and I have never had a frosted screen since.:thumbup:

Upon reflection I have come to the two following conclusion's, that

1) Simply by listening to the fan through all 4 speeds and feeling the airflow through the vents, then doing the same with the recirculate switched on you can tell if your filter needs seeing too. It beats having to play with that *&^%$*^^&$^%(% plastic bit if not needed.:) (if this is already known/done be gentle I'm a :newbie: )

Thinking back I had never tried the recirculate button, as I had always had it on screen, to try and clear the screen, so it never worked, and fan spinning like mad, well it was trying to suck air through water.

2) Skoda's Rule :thumbup: (nothing to do with the problem but when a conclusion is right,... it's right).

The passat had a similar problem where i believe water collected in the pollen filter or something.

I think it's in trhe Skoda service schedule that at certain intervals the guttering is cleared. I had the same problem and presume that it was too much hassle for the garage to carry out the service. I could hear water sloshing about and the AA very promptly came and fixed the prob. I too cracked the plastic shield.

Don't know if it helps, but let's see.

I spent 15 mins trying to remove the plastic shield by pulling it straight up. Then noticed you actually have to pull it horizontally forward in order to get it off the windscreen properly. Perhaps you were smarter than me and did it the right way from the beginning and still ended up with broken parts...

Edit 24.10.: Scrap that text above, don't know what I had been eating when that came out. Just changed the pollen air filter and the plastic thingy definitely needs to be pulled up. Was easy though, first the leading edge under the removable rubber seal and then the center of the trailing edge (against the window) with a little help from a screw driver as leverage. By the way, you probably don't need to have the wipers removed, it's enough to stop them at 12 o´clock position.

Warming the plastic shield with a hairdryer before removing it will make it less likely to crack, particularly in winter.
