swapping a little vrs for a big vrs or even a 2.5 Superb?

Featured Replies

I am sure I am not the first to ask this, but you can imagine how many hits I get searching the relevant words on this particular site, so apologies.

I have the opportunity to swap my 06 Fabia VRS for a 55 plate Mk1 Octavia VRS.

Both cars have similar mileage (i.e. not a lot).

Has anyone 'upgraded' from the Fabia to the Octavia Mk1? Was there any looking back?

What are the pros and cons, other than losing that 50MPG economy?

BTW what MPG can I realistically expect from the Octy, driven in urban conditions and also on the motorway? I am guessing 30 round town and 40 on a run, is that too optimistic?

I love the Fabia round town, but I am doing some long runs lately (500 miles in a day) and find the Fabia uncomfortable for a long journey. The Octy feels like it would be the better choice for motorway journeys.

If the MPG on the Octy is going mean my fuel costs double I might look for a Superb 2.5 TDi. Any comments on those, and again has anyone jumped from the Fabia to the Superb?

I should imagine going from a PD130 Fabia to a PD130 Superb isn't so much fun, hence I am thinking 2.5 V6 if I go the Superb route.

TIA for any replies!

Personally I toyed with the idea of a mk1 octy after the first Furb vRS, I have now bought a second Furby. If you where talking about a mk2 Octy then I would say buy providing you could afford the fuel, and didn't mind a much larger car. The Superb I quite fancy but never driven as I require dog space in our main car. Probably not much help then really, think if you get the mk1 you'll be dissapointed at first but once you adapt your driving to the petrol/ torque of the 1.8 then it will grow on you, the mk2 is much torquier so not such a shock going from a deisal. For what its worth I have driven the from Bradford to Poole in one treck in both the Furb and a Octy LK and found the furb just as comfy. (All statements made come with the disclaimer that I am incompetenet and don't really know what I'm talking about :P)

Octavia vrs nice but ....very low, hits nearly every kerbstone, driveway and sleeping policeman, goes very well and if you drive like a granny 44mpg on the motorway (you loose the will to live after a while) or around town anything as low as 24mpg road fund tax is much higher and likely to higher still.

Superb ...loads of room, very comfortable and the motorway goes past you ...it's the only way I can describe it....you dont go along, the motorway passes you.

It's also not that bad for fun and corners....yes it's a big car and once you get used to it it will keep up with most things...even around corners :D ......pd 130 goes very well and to be honest there probably isn't too much between the 130 and 2.5 ....2,5 may be smoother but is heavier.

1.9 With a remap can go very well ....7.5 secs to 60 ...no idea what the top speed is.....

Lots of toys ...I think I have now found all mine ...but it was fun finding out.

Superb about 50mpg on a run or 35 around town.

Any info you need just ask

Would go for a Superb Elegance Auto if I were doing that sort of mileage.

Have you thought about a Oct'y2 2.0tdi?

Might try out an Octy 2 2.0 TDI actually then, thanks for that idea :D

I am sure my local dealer wont mind me trying both that and a Superb PD130, maybe the 2.5 as well.

MPG and road tax cost has just put me off the idea of an Octy VRS plus there is also the additional insurance cost. The main thing though is the comment about it not seeming more comfy than the Furby over a distance. Bit of a shocker, that!

Losing warranty has stumped any ideas of remaps so far on the furby, but if i can find a PD130 Superb just coming up three years old with the steptronic box, that plus a map might be ideal for me - no clutch to worry about then (I think?)

Toyed with the idea of the Superb 2.8 but they dont seem to be cheap enough to warrant the fuel cost (what i mean is that if they depreciated hard and were half the price of the diesel, then could be a lovely choice as in my own mind that would offset the fuel cost running it)

Dare I say I have been considering the Vectra or Signum 3.0 CDTi or would I get shot for saying that?

I can vouch that Octygone's superb shifts along hjaving followed him down the M4 and around Bristol in my Furby vRS!

I've also driven drm_jones's MKI Octy vRS....all I can say is....

If I could afford to run the Octy that'd be my choice! However the superb is a lovely car but I've always loved the Octy!

Can't comment on the comparison but I've had my octy vrs for about 3 weeks now and I seem to be averaging about 30-32mpg out of the tank. (This is far better than the old escort 1.8 which needed constant hammering to perform, hence gave about 26-28 on a REALLY good day!)

My drive to work is back lanes there (about 22-24mpg runting it:rolleyes: ) and main road home to avoid traffic problems at the town end (about 38mpg with cruise at 60:) ) and on a recent run of 120 miles each way we were showing 34mpg on the dials which averaged out at 32 over the tank full.

I have seen 44mpg on the clock but as I don't drive enough miles at that rate I cannot say if it's that accurate.

On the subject of comfort the octy is the most comfy and enjoyable car I've owned with the ride being less harsh than my old escort LX (which had 205/40/17's on, possibly something to do with it...............)

Test drove the furby vrs too and I liked it but it was a bit like going back to my old festa which after having a big escort for 5 years felt like the wrong way to go.

Matt

We have a 130 Superb at work that I've done a fair few miles in - not a bad car

Performance doesn't have the same edge as the Furby (ours is the 5 speed so it has slightly less torque than the 6 speed versions - 285nm IIRC) but it does go well for such a big car. I had a play with a 2.0TDi Octy with my bro driving (class 1 trained driver) and straight line pace was comparable, but the Superb was massively less agile (and I had it on the absolute limit) and actually got a bit frightening on tight b road bends.

If you do a lot of motorway miles the Superb is a fantastic car IMHO

The Superb is a lot like the previous generation Passat and having owned the latter, I can vouch for their ability to eat the motorway miles. The Passat was also remarkably agile on the twisty stuff, so I don't doubt the Superb has similar capabilities.

However, the Octy has a newer chassis which is a lot sharper - depends what you want really, but IMO even the bog-standard Furby isn't a bad motorway car.

Never driven a Superb, but my Mk 1 Octy vRS eats the miles. Using cruise you can get over 40 mpg on a long run. Round town mid 20's - 30 mpg.

I can do the round trip Stirling - Inverness and back (300 miles) in a day without feeling tired or stressed. And that has no motorway - all the way up the A9 which is a mix of single and dual carriageway.

SWMBO once nodded off as we were cruising at 120mph :eek: (on an unrestricted road :)) - so it's comfortable for passengers too :thumbup:

Dare I say I have been considering the Vectra or Signum 3.0 CDTi or would I get shot for saying that?

Or how about a Mondeo ST TDCI? Depreciate nicely in the first year, so buying nearly new makes sense. Eats up motorway miles, great on the twisty stuff and can add a

MK I is in a very high insurance group for a car of it's size.

Personally, MK I probably not MK II then :D

I did a few miles in my Octy Mk1 (138,000 in 28 months) so I feel I can comment on what they are like for long trips.

I never had any trouble doing big mile days, regularly drove 500+ in a day with no problems. Not bad on the economy stakes and seemed to be rather brisk (I'm sure those on here who came across it could elucidate on how quick it was eh Jason? ;) )

Not ried a Fabia, reckon it would be too small for my needs. Driven a couple of Superbs on long trips and found them to be very good, they just didn't suit me. Also found the leather to be permanantly cold during the winter, had to drive everywhere with the seat heaters set to medium rare.

For an idea of the costs, I did start a thread for people to list the running costs of different models. When I find it I'll bump it up for you.....

Just bumped it for you. Having a read through it does have some Superb costs in there and some Fabia ones for comparison.....
