Vista RC1

Featured Replies

Well ive gone and installed Vista Ultimate RC1 on both my home PC and works laptop, Dualboot of course.. but to be honest ive not needed to go back to xp!

Its running great, the only issue ive had is the software for my ATI remote wonder does not work, even tho vista seems to have native support for the remote, in itself no biggie as ive also got a MCE remote that i use with the 360. I really am liking the centralized features like search folders so i have EVERYTHING of a certian type to look like its in the same place.. eg ive got mp3's and movies strewn all over the place, but the various search folders can organise them to look like they are all together.. The media features are nicely intergrated, and im finding myself actually using media player for a change as its nicely intergrated into the UI.. And the fancy task-switching (windows+tab) and taskbar previews are quite handy as they even show whats on the screen in a remote desktop session (which i use alot at work).. just a little thing, but it really helps

Anyone else using vista day to day?

Where can I obtain a copy please?

yep, used BETA 2 on the laptop, currently running the Pre-RC1 release whilst i wait for RC1 to download/burn to dvd. i'm really liking it to be honest

Its available for d/l from microsoft if you signed up for the CPP program in june.

or bittorrent may be faster

Grr , Daemon Tolls and Nero dinnae work with it tho ...

other than that , at last a decent "looking" GUI from gates.

Downloaded RC1 this morning. Quick question can you install RC1 from scratch on a new disk or do I have to install Beta 2, apply relevant updates, then install RC1 as I had to wipe my Beta 2 test PC?

You can install it from scratch m8, I have just wiped the company laptop and stuck it on, I am just tidying up now

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Dubious about installing on my FSC Laptop as not sure all drivers etc will be available, has SATA Disk and some other none XP Standard Parts W/Less & Standard LAN Cards etc.

It's gone onto my HP NX9105 64 bit laptop.

Used the 32 bit RC1 and it's picked up everything; GeForce 440G0, Broadcom Wired / Wireless NIC's, NForce chipset, in fact, no question / exclamation marks anywhere in device manager.

11 hours to go - maxing out my 256k internet link!!

Now the debate is do I give it a go on my FSC Amilo M1437G

Assume it won't support intant on after install for watching DVD's etc. But a long as it runs Lotus Notes, MS Office 2003 Pro and Symantec Client Security & Anti-Virus I will be fine.... I think.

Can anyone confirm it will run the Anti-Virus Stuff or do I need a special Vista Version?

You may be on a sticky wicket with the AV, Microsoft have partnered with Trend for the Beta of Vista, I am using the PC-Cillin 14.56 on the trial until it expires on October 31st.

I suspect that your current symantec AV may well bomb out in Vista

There is some info from Symantec here

Must say I am impressed with Vista so far and will pop it onto the desktop monster games rig this weekend to see how it gets on, just hope it handles quad SLI on my silly video card setup :D

QUAD sli :eek::eek: yikes...

Edit... Still room for improvement http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115384

Have installed RC1 here today, looking good and seems more stable than the pre-rc1 build.

Where can I get RC1 to install it? Recently did a fresh install of XP Pro and havent uploaded all my backup DVDs yet, so got nothing to lose!

At this stage you need to have registered for the customer preview program with microsoft. The link Colin posted above has a place you can register.

It was a moment of madness ..... total bloody madness. It's not "true" quad SLI, but two 7950GX2's in SLI. Should be future proof for around 10 minutes or so though m8.

I should thank my brother in law actually as he bought a 7950 and thought the X1900XT was better on image quality so he passed it to me :D and I already had one .... so new board later, much gaming madness ensued.

7950 as well

My ol 7800GT was pick of the crop last week

Mind you.. i cant remember the last time i played a game on the PC after gettin the 360... i occasionally have a quick shot at live for speed, and sometimes PREY.. ive got the lego starwars demo on at the mo :D

but other than that, my gametime is taken up by dead rising, TDU and saints row on the 'box

EDIT: and i forgot about the best game ever made.... PLASMA PONG

I reccomend you all give it a shot.. and whack the gfx effects up full :P

sorry to jack the thread but is there anyway i can create a partion on a disc that is in use so i can dual boot rc1 i got it running on an old desktop seems good but i want to put it on my laptop but got a lot of stuff including vag com that i need to keep running for emergency use

  • 5 weeks later...

Today I bit the bullet and have installed RC1 on my HTPC. Previously using MCE2005 with an xbox360 as an extender.

Have to say, I am impressed, everything works fine. The MCE interface takes some getting used to, but its ok. The 360 connects just fine, and performs as per the MCE2005 install.

Only one issue I have, and thats down to the Nvidia graphics driver. Currently I have massive overscan on my TV, under MCE2005 I could underscan the image to make it fit properly. The current Vista driver doesnt yet support this, but its not to bad.

RC2 is out now, but I have read about compatibility problems with the current nvidia drivers, so RC1 will do for now.

Manny.. there is a new Nv beta driver on their website IIRC...

Ive just started messing with Media Centre on Vista (not having any previous exposure to MCE..) and must say im impressed.. already have a MCE remote i use for the xbox and wmp, but this just makes things easier.. one button press on the remote starts media centre and thats it.. can control everything else from the comfort of my own bed/(sofa with the 360 and VLC360)

I especially like the gallery.. earlier i was playing some radiohead using media centre and started a picture slideshow... the way it was blending between pics and "moving" them... was so sublime.. its difficult to explain.. but its getting a big :thumbup: from me

Something like partition magic can re-size and add partitions on a live system.. available from your nearest stockest, or BitT site ;)

Also looks like, for a while I am down a folding rig. You cant install the folding client as a service, it says you must have admin rights, even though I do.

Thatll be that fecking annoying UAC thing... it can be disabled altho i cant remember where from off the top of my head!!

One really nice feature ive found...

in the "backup and restore centre" you can manage backups etc.. but this allows you to create a FULL image-backup of your pc to another device.. network/external drive etc and can restore it all using the CD if it goes pearshaped.

It makes the image as a VHD, which is the same format microsoft virtual PC uses for virtual hard discs - now... i wonder ;)

vista also has some pretty powerful fixing skills... it managed to fix itself after i formatted the hdd that had vistas NTLDR on it.

Disabled UAC, and still the same.

So, thought I would try RC2, not a good idea.

Now its all installed but LiveTV in mediacenter is broken, it scans and finds all the channels but doesnt display a picture. All this was fine in RC1.
