ASR takes the skill element out of driving, and in turn produces "worse" drivers. The only time your ASR would ever cut in, is if you - thats YOU, not the car, had given it too much throttle and your wheels were going to spin.

Hmmmm.. kind of agree, but it's hard to tell until you actually break traction. A good driver will judge when that might happen, do it, and adjust accordingly.

Lets set the scene: You're stopped on a main road, indicating to turn right and the road is wet/slippery. The traffic is fairly heavy, but you manage to pick your gap, and as the next car passes your going for it before the next one passes.

And away you pull, only, the damn ASR has cut in, which has put you in a seemingly dangerous situation, no power, in the middle of the road, with on coming traffic - great!

With ASR off, that same driver would most probably have tried to make up for the wheel spin and lack of movement by pressing even harder on the throttle, leaving you in an even worse situation.

Correct. In that situation, a good driver might break traction, and then adjust to take account.

The "better" driver would have been aware of the road condition

Not always possible (patch of diesel?), but of course, a good driver would have left enough gap to allow, or would abandon the pull-out.

Sure, all things considered, nothing is always possible.

I just get the feeling that some people tend to rely on their ASR to save them, and then critisize it when it doesnt behave how they would expect or like it to.

All it is, is an electronic power kill to the driven wheels when it sences wheel spin has happened. Thats all.

It's not going to save you in a bend if you've gone at it too quick, its not going to give you the perfect ammount of power for the fastest possible start off the line.

If I drive with ASR on, and the little light flickers, it's because i've made a mistake, like wise, if I drive with it off, and my wheels spin, it's because i've made a mistake.

I like to drive with it off, and never (un-intentionally) spin the wheels, + turning it off saves a little bit of fuel dont you know ;)

Personally, I find the ASR completely unintrusive. It allows a fair bit of slippage before cutting in, so if you have let it get that far out of hand, you are probably not driving very well.

I find it possible to nudge just a little wheelspin in corners to feel out the grip without it cutting power. The little light flickers on as you hear and feel the wheelspin, but it takes a while to cut power, by which time I have got the traction back and there is no cut out.

Thinking about it, I dont think the ASR has ever cut power on mine.

Chris

i'd l;ove to know haw to turn the dam thing off.

Got ESP on my fabia and have never engaged it, but there is no button for the ASR. Unless the magic VAG COM does it....

ESP is instead of ASR

still get the ARS light flash when wheel spin accurs. Even when ESP is not engaged

I found a switch

Turned it on

Hit the ditch

And carried on

I was so near

Now you’re so far

Are you quite sure

Just who you are….

Sound familiar?

you do realise it comes on every time you start the car and have to make a consious effort to turn it off rather than on don't you??

bull carp mate, so your saying not once in your life have you ever had the tiniest bit of wheels psin and not meant to?? or are you obvioulsy the best ever driver in the world ever and could teach everyone on the planet a thing or three?

don't talk such rubbish!! i bet disconnecting your ABS saves fuel consumption too doesn't it? just like folding your rear seats down improves the handling?

get down form that high horse sir knight and talk proper like us normal people!

I normally run with ASR on, and other than preventing wheelspin when picking out of greasy junctions (taking the steering lock off would stop the spin if the ASR didn't get there first), the only times I've seen it on were dealing with high throttle and undiagnosed standing water type situations.

Only had my vrs for two days now so not really had alot of time to test out the ASR. So far it's only activated once when I hit some deep standing water last night. I'll probably leave it on unless I feel it is not really aiding my drive. Time will tell.

I leave it on for 99% of the time. Only off when at lights and I have something "challenging" alongside me :D I've found that too many times with ASR on it's bogged me down and I've been left behind. Switching it off allows me to control any spin and get away - fast.
