another car with my reg mark

Featured Replies

here's a good one peeps:

my next door neighbour called to see me this afternoon to say he had spotted my old car, a vectra, which i traded in against the octy a couple of months back, being driven fast through traffic with a bunch of, his words, hoodies on board complete with the reg of my octy, a cherished transfer, still on it! even though i had filled out the various parts of the vectra V5 and dvla had sent an updated V5 to me, to forward to the dealer, with the new reg mark for the vectra.

rung the local cop-shop and after explaining the deal to them, there response? "don't worry about it sir". when i asked what would happen if, say, the hoodies smashed into another car or filled up with fuel then drove off without paying, the area where my neighbour seen the car is the centre for this sort of thing, cops reply: "again don't worry about it sir".

dude , worry about it. dont just leave it ,that reg will be in your name so if anything happens that means you got to prove you didnt do it.... dont forget desk cops arnt there because of their high I.Q.

I agree, something needs to be done. you are right to be concerned because its you the police will come to if something happens.

first thing tomorrow morning i'm going to ring the dealer i bought the octy from to see what they did with the vectra, in other words to see if i can find out why the vectra was sold with the incorrect reg on it. also i intend to phone dvla to see if they can give me some advice, after that i'll ring the cops back and see of they will help, i'll also get the number of the cop i speak to for future reference.

does anyone know if the police log telephone conversations, the wpc i spoke to today took my name etc?

You need to stress to all concerned how important this is. If the car gets a parking ticket or speeding ticket, the onus will be on you to prove that it wasnt you involved.

You can imagine the mess that results when they have a serious accident, and you have to prove it wasn't you. Fancy a night in the cells?

I'd be after an agreement that they will cover any costs you incurr as a result of this. No doubt they'll try and claim it got nicked.

You need to get this sorted. If there is any kind of incident involving a car with that registration, who are the Police going to go after? A law-abiding Skoda owner whose name and address they know (and so is easy to prosecute), or a bunch of 'hoodies' who will give false names & adresses even if they are caught?

Surely if the police run a check on the plate it will shown that it belongs to an Octy and not a vectra.. which will be abit of a give away that somethings not quite right and pull them over (if they haven't already)

Also if they're caught by a speed camera again the pic will be of a vectra... I know it doesn't help if they're involved in a hit'n'run or similar and the only info handed to the police is the reg number.

Are the cars the same colour? or completely different? again something that might help in your defence...

I do agree with everyone else here in that this shouldn't be just left and needs sorting out one way or another :D

the vec was sliver and the octy is...sliver!

have not gotten an incident report number from the police stating my concerns, the cop i spoke to said if i'm pulled over etc to quote this, it should help.

SLIVER????

This all seems a bit fishy to me!

At least that's a start... :)

Scary thought but what if your neighbour hadn't spotted your old car

Any word from the dealers yet?

When selling a car with a registration that you are transfering always remove the plates from the old car...

have you tried typing you reg and car details in here at least it will tell you that your cherished number is on the right car (could also type in the vectra and the original number just to double check here's the link its a DVLA site default | Vehicle Enquiry

main dealer has contacted the private, read arthur daly, dealer and it turns out the car was sold friday night past, and the guy who bought it lives in the same area as me!

the main dealer has asked the private one to phone the buyer and tell him to change the plates, rung the coppers and, since i have an incident number, have told me they are happy enough to let things sit. they said not to worry about the cars being the same colour as they are, at least, different makes. i've also rung dvla and they said there is nothing more i can do, i've covered myself, i've also logged the series of events for future reference, should i need it.
