Help wiring up my amplifier?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

What I'm trying to do is to wire up my amp and sub etc into my octy VRS 55. I'm having major trouble getting a power cable from the bonnet through to the foot well. Has anyone got any idea if there is a gromit that I can put it through?

Or is this just a case of 'Get the drill out and make a lovely shiney new hole in my gorgeous car!!!' :(

Cheers

In my experience (not worked on a tavvy) there is always a gromit on vag cars as they're designed for LHD. i would suggest just under the wipers near the top of the bulkhead and then routing it down behind the carpets

I'm assuming it's an octy mk1 ???

I had right fun doing mine recently, searched loads on here but couldn't see the obvious!

You need to get the glovebox out (5 torq screws and carefully remove the light connection!) and remove the passenger side scuttle panel (plastic thingy under the screen/wipers) - this is a pig of a job which I had to get the dealer to help with and still involved me holding the bonnet half way up for him  .

It clips into a plastic channel attached to the screen and actually lifts out at 90 degrees to the screen. Some force is required to start it off and be warned, my dealer says they have broken windscreens doing it before!!

Once off, remove the pollen filter and box (again not easy!) and you'll find a grommit there which can be used - mine came out just behind one of the air con pipes behind the glove box.

Then run the cable down the left hand trims on the floor to the boot - don't forget a fuse by the battery!

Sorry if this seems rushed - I'm over running a break!!!

PM me if you need more help and I'll try to give it!

Sounds like this could be a fun job!! (Is a mk1)

Really don't want to break my windscreen though.

I have looked around the main wiring loom into the car, but is way too tight to even think about putting a cable through..

At least I dont have to put it up on axle stands and squirm underneath it to find the hole.

I will have a look and let you know how I get on with it.

Cheers for the help.

:)

Look above the pedals!

Behind the trim there is a copper bus bar for the +12v power to the fuse box and a few other connections.

When I wired in my active sub I put a ring crimp on the cable and connected there.

As long as you are fused correctly there is no problem with that.

If you take the plenum chamber cover off, there is a grommet for where the bonnet release cable goes for left hand drive vehicles, so this is not in use, just remove the grommet and push through, should get a pretty big cable through, hope this helps

i wouldn't take it from the fuse board as the cable sizing has been designed for the original fit items so may not be up to spec of running a sub/amp off it.

i never removed the scuttle and i have a zero guage cable running through my car, about 10" down from the bonnet seal behind the battery on the bulkhead there is a grommet that is perfectly adaquate, its below that vertical bit of plastic cover that is curved at the top. bit awkward to get to at times but works fine and you won't break anything :)

Depends how big the amp is I suppose.

I was going to say the same. Exactly above the brake pedal there is a plastic cover. when you remove this plastic cover you will see this copper distribution bar. You will see there a THICK red wire and they have a label with some numbers. I am pretty sure you can take power from this wire.

Also, this thick wire is fuse protected with some fuses that are on top of the battery, do as stev2000 recomend you and intall a fuse as near as possible from this thick wire.

Good luck,

Isaac
