heated seats problem

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, this is my first post.

I purchased my new Fabia Elegance Estate 1.9 TDI 2 months ago, goes great but since driving it have developed ( don't laugh ) a sore backside at the top of the crack of my backside. Couldn't figure out what was causing it but 2 weeks ago was reaching across to the front passenger door and happened to put my hand down on the passenger seat right in the middle at the back where the upright meets the bottom, there was a hard lump which pressing it appeared to be about 1/2 " high, I tried my own seat and found an identical lump although not as bad, this lump is in the exact position as the sore patch on my backside. My wife has no problem with her seat as she sits further forward and I sit further back.

I called in my Skoda dealer and a meachanic examined it saying he had never seen the fault before, I made an appointment to take the car in last week and was told the seats would have to be stripped down to see what was causing the problem.

The car went in and I expected to pick the car up later that day but the Service Manager rang and told me this was completely new to them and they would have to have the Skoda rep in for him to examine it and advise what to do. The following day the Skoda rep examined the car and suggested that some padding might solve the problem but the service manager wasn't happy putting padding near the heating elements, that was a non starter. The following day the service manager contacted Skoda and they suggested changing the seats and swapping them from another car to replace mine, he was shocked to discover that all the Fabia heated seats he had were all like mine.

They put my seats back and told me that a big investigation was going to take place and a report had been sent to Skoda which might take 2-3 weeks to sort out.

I am off on holiday so hopefully something will be sorted when I get back.

On examining Fabia's with no heated seats there is no lump so presumably it must be the heating setup that is causing my problem, at the moment I have a strip of bubble wrap where the bump is and this is doing the job of cushioning my backside.

Sorry about the long message but I would be interested if anyone else has the same problem, I can't see any mention though in the messages.

Everyone with heated seats please check and see if you have my problem without even realising it

Welcome aboard Terry.

A long first post but looks very good grammar and spelling wise which is a refreshing change these days.

I have not heard of the problem myself but having stipped down a fair few seats in the past I cant honestly say I know of any internal differences in the seat other than the heating mat itself which is very thin.

An odd one indeed.

I reckon it's the small thermister used to regulate the temperature of the seats which is located in the heat pad.

I stripped down my drivers seat to repair an open circuit in the heating element and on cutting into the pad to repair the broken heating wire I noticed the thermister.

It's about the size of a pea and has two (of the four going into the pad) wires attached to it.

I can still feel mine through the seat cover although to be fair it doesn't cause me any discomfort.

I have this lump in my heated seats too, although i can't feel it when i sit down so i'm not really concerned...

Never noticed it in my old Fabia.

Thanks everyone, at least someone has noticed the fault and it's not my imagination. Will post when I hear from Skoda.

Now you mention it, yes I remember my heated seats being lumpy, but I only noticed it when cleaning them and not when sitting on them :D My driver's seat was stripped down and the mats replaced, so it may have been as a result of that....

That's interesting ScoobyChris, this is what I would put money on I/m sure the trouble stems from the heating pad.

I don't think its a fault.... the lump is too far back to ever be a problem (for me atleast) so its just the way they are... imo...

  • 4 months later...

Now that I have a photograph of the heated seat pad I thought I'd post on this thread again.

The thermister ( there to avoid overheating) which I mentioned in my previous reply above can be seen as a small round object just down from the silver staple type thing in the photo below.

I wonder if this is "the lump" causing the O.P. problems ?

As the originator of this query I am pleased to tell everyone that at long last my seats have been modified, don't know exactly what they did but it involved the seat base and padding, this involved Skoda UK who suggested the mods.

Everything is fine now!!
