ABS ASR Warning Lights

Featured Replies

I replaced the front pads on my superb today and when I have taken it for a test drive the ABS and ASR warning lights have come on. So I stripped down the front brakes again - to make sure the pads were seated correctly - which they were. I also checked that the various wires and pipes were in order - which they were, brake fluid also full.

Then took it out for another test run and sure enough the warning lights were still on. Then I decided to check whether the ABS and ASR worked - and they don't.

I am at a loss as to what the problem might be,any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would be pretty confident in saying that you need to check your ABS / Wheel Speed sensors, if they are dirty or have been knocked then they won't work.

They are cheap to replace but might be worth getting a VAG-COM read out.

Could be that once triggered the warning lamps may have to be reset by a dealer. Just a guess though!

I hope it's not the same problem as mine has, it displays the same warning lights.

Mine needs the ABS control module replacing at £600. and 3 week back order for the part.

You didn't dis-connect the battery for any reason did you?

If everything is fitted correctly I would think it is some crud which has fallen down onto the sensor.

Did you use genuine pads?

ABS wont work if the lights are on.

I've got no real way of checking it out unfortunately, the only garage with the right computer equipment is the Skoda one who are waiting for the part, the VW garage wont do it as it's a Skoda and he reckons he doesn't have the correct codes etc.

What else can I do? i've been without the car for a week and a half now, and still another week and half till the part is 'supposed' to arrive, i've been lucky that i've borrowed someones car who is on holiday so I can still earn money.

What would happen if Skoda fit the new control module and it doesnt solve the problem? would they even tell me? or just find out that it's something cheaper and still charge me the full amount?

Like I said mate I could be completely wrong but I couldn't get the ABS light off my Bora and VW said I needed a new ABS Control Unit and they wanted big bucks, I sourced another one and it didn't cure it, in the end it was the sensors!!

Have they checked these and replaced them first? Cheaper option if you ask me?

As for being honest with you, I have only ever had bad experiences with dealers so I am biased as all the so called mechanic's are just fitter's so I wouldn't expect them to be honest.

I guess you will see what the outcome is when they have fixed it?

look up a brisk member with a VAG-COM cable in the neibourhood - I'm sure there'll be someone out there to help with that part.

I own a 2001 Fabia and have the same problem so I brought a Skoda FCR from Gendan Automotive Products it told me the problem and turned off the lights.

I checked with them first to see if my car was covered-very promt reply and FCR

came next day.Only down side it will cost you 30 Quid

Well, they charged me £200 to diagnose the fault, apparently they tried re-coding the unit and spent 6 hours on the computer whilst talking to some Skoda tech at HQ, and the unit wont hold a code for some reason.

According to another member (who knows what he's talking about) it is normal for the unit to need re-coding after the steering squib cable is replaced, which is what mine had done (another £200) when the fault became known straight after, the usual practice is then to re-code the contol module, but obviously mine wont hold the code for some reason?

It's not so-much the price of the repair to be honest (although another £600 bill isn't particularly welcome) it's the fact the car will have been of the road for a minimum of 3 weeks (assuming the part arrives on time), which incurs me car rental costs on top of the repair bill, plus a major amount of hassle.

I'm totally fed up with the car and the dealer network to be honest now, and once it's earned back the £1500 it's cost me this month (not including servicing or car rental etc) it's going. Sadly it's only done 115k so doesn't bode well for Skoda reliability particularly being there flagship model!

Sorry to hear about all this mate but at least it looks like the problem is coming to an end.

Never heard of this 'cable' you spoke of but I will bear this in mind for future problems.

I'll find out on thursday, thats when it's finally booked in to have the control module replaced!

The Squib cable is not actually a cable, it's a black plastic 'thing' that goes behind the steering wheel and connects all the cables from the wheel to the loom (it probably contains some cable trickery inside it) Mine has ESP so is a bit more complicated having a steering angle sensor within it too!

Ended up taking it into skoda, where they told me that the fault was the wheel speed sensor. So I got that replaced and they found that it was showing another fault!! That was soon sorted but it ended up costing me the thick end of £300.

Oh and to put the top-hat on it whilst they were working on it they told me I had a split cv boot.
