The Future of Motoring on Television

Featured Replies

Having been subjected to the utter garbage that Fifth Gear have put out this evening it got me thinking into what has happened to car TV programmes over the years.

Top Gear have pioneered the way but have steadily got more and more extreme. Although I still love TG I think there is now room for a motoring programme that goes back to the basic principle of road tests with a subjective winner, similar to What Car magazines journalistic style.

What do you think?.

Yep , I wouldn't say no to something like that.

A 30 minute sensible comparison of "ordinary" cars wouldn't get huge ratings like TG but it would be that daft an idea either

Like most things its on tv dumbing down, it's become car p0rn, all no-knickers sports cars and crazy antics. Just like the way the airwaves are also filled with property p0rn about how you can make a sqillion pounds from buying a ****hole and selling it to some other mug.

I like Top Gear but also want a proper serious car show not 4 or 5 bad copycat shows.

What happened to the car show from channel 4 (Drive?). A reasonable show that tested and compared cars that we might actually end up owning as well as a bit of exotica. Or is my memory failing me? Wasn't Plato was on that one first? Used car roadshow is ok too.

Fifth Gear and Top Gear are also being shown here in Denmark, and i must say that i find Fifth Gear carp.

Top Gear is more like entertainment. As you lot say, too many fancy cars that we can`t afford.

I don`t know if you can get German TV-channels in GB, but i think you should have a look at Abenteuer Auto which runs on Kabel1, and Auto, Motor und Sport which runs on VOX.

Both programmes are really good, and do alot of testing of affordable cars.

I see these programmes as, like serious programmes, where as i see TG as mostly entertaining.
