not sure if its just me but my standard speakers are crap wont take any base anyone else have this prob.

Well known issue on Mark 1's. Try doing a search in the Octavia section for speakers. There are a few tips & tricks to improve the standard speaker sound, and recommendations for new ones too.

Yes , everyone has that problem.

Both the stereo and speakers are dire as fitted.

Replace the lot for a much better sound

If you haven't done this then do it asap. It's really really easy. The grills just prise off with a screwdriver and the speaker come off with 4 screws.

Once you've cut the back of the material out and given the speakers "air" to work in they sound 100 times better. Hardly any distortion now.

behind my (02 vRS) speakers I find a grey flexible foam "membrane" - is this the one that needs cutting? I expected to find a stout clear plastic membrane.. Is it better to take the whole door panel off to do this and get a better view of things?

Not really a design fault.

The 'material' behind the speaker is a membrane which seals the door. Now have a read of the water leak threads on Octavias and people asking why water runs over the door sill when its raining heavily.

Its there for a reason.

yeah, i fully appreciate why it's there, and the need to maintain an overhanging "flap" behind the speaker to allow water to drain down - I'd expected the "membrane" to be stout polythene type material, all i see behind the speaker is this grey foam material, which i guess is probably in addition to the membrane, best take the whole panel off to get the full picture

And a flap will be useless as the water comes upwards.

Dealer told me that the foam was a modified one to stop a nasty farting noise that the speakers made. Mine is ok and has the foam there still.

Does water really get in if you cut that grey membrane thing? That front speaker mod thread shouldn't be a sticky then.

I made the mod months ago and I haven't had any problems.

Now I am confused... how does the water come upwards ?? Surely there are drains in the bottom of the doors?? (i have to admit I haven't looked that closely yet )

And mine do make that farting noise , with the foam fitted. and intact.

I cut away some of the door sealing foam and haven't had any water leaking issues through the doors

I have cut flaps in the membrane of my doors, and had leaks initially. I got around the problem by sticking some duck tape along the edges of the "flap" (sides and bottom). This prevents the flap opening inwards which would allow water to run inside the door membrane.

No, but then I don't listen to that "thud thud thud" rubbish at volumes that subjects my neighbours to it!

The previous owner fitted new speakers and my door leaks.... :-(

cheers for the advice seems like a bass box in the boot would be the best solution dont fancy having my doors leaking.
