vrs to cosworth

Featured Replies

Why oh why am I really having the urge to change my octy vrs (which I love) for a sierra cosworth?? :o

I am looking at a 4x4 in moonstone blue or mercury grey with leather etc. I know there gettin' on a bit now but in my eyes a real modern classic and subject of many an adolescent day dream.....

Please advise...............................

If you do decide thats what you want, make sure its a good 'un. They are expensive to run and fix let alone buy. I think they are great cars but wouldn't have one purely due to the fact that they will be mainly coming up to rust years and the price will plummet.

Nice cars, just be careful what you buy.

I could be wrong but iirc you cant get a 4x4 in moonstone blue:confused:

be aware that the 4*4 system will only handle 350bhp, any more and it destroys itself....... make sure the engine is OK for unleaded.... and drive one first! they will seem agricultural compaired to your octy (had a go in a cosworth escort recently) be prepared for turbo lag and noise! lol... a classic, yeah , i may agree, but you are gonna have bills when it breaks, and may not be able to live with the lack of refinement.... (the saloon 4*4 were also so low the exhaust used to hit the ground if you have 4 or more people in 'em!) ...

anyway, if ya do, please stay on here and post your experiances!

edit: still bloody fast though, even for modern standards! :)

Thaks chaps  My cousin had 4 escort cosworths  and loved em, but never had a sierra  I am not sure about the moonstone blue issue and 350 bhp is enough for me:rofl:

I work in the motor trade so a lot of the running costs would be reduced, but still considerable on one but i just find myself really drawn to one,

Anyway I really want your comments, views and experiences :)

even in standard form they would leave an octy vrs for dead.......

i think the think you will miss most is the comfort and smoothness of driving the octy.... i do some servicing on a mates cossie and i hate drving them..... buy hey each to his own....

If youve always wanted one then DO IT.

If by moonstone you mean the light Silvery Metallic Blue the very first Sierra Cosworths were available in that colour, my old boss had one. These were the Hatch Backs with the whale fin spoiler. The later 5 doors which had the Saphire body Im not so sure about

My only thought is that a lot have been tampered with & bent so if you intend to keep it for a while take your time to get a new one & I would put good mechanicals & history above colour, if your in the trade you will know how cheap a cash respray can be :) :)

especially as I am a painter by trade

look on Turbosport Entrance, its a Ford forum, mainly cosworth and old skool stuff. Usually a few very good examples for sale on there

I think you'd be better off with an Impreza or an EVO 5/6

Far more reliable, superior handling and road holding as standard.

not if he wants a cossie...:P

I've never driven a Cosworth, but I drove a Sierra 2.0 a few years ago. It felt like a very old car....

I'm sure a Cosworth would be fun though

Um, RS500... The Saph is so dull to look at in comparison!

Boring (to look at anyway)

Pretty sure both would be a pain in the **** to live with. The main problem with the Saph is that its still kind of got the drug dealer look to it, whereas the original is a classic now.

Going from a modern Skoda to a classic Impreza is hard enough when you're sat there looking at the nasty plastic dash, going back to a car that was created 30 years ago is nuts IMHO.

I just think that you could find more reliable cars that would be just as much fun - especially if its more than just a weekend car.

But each to their own, I suppose.

i reckon it's best to get what you want if you can, otherwise you'll always have that little niggling regret :)

Thats not an RS500. :P :P

True...... a bit like buying a FWD Octavia because you cant wait till a nice 4x4 comes along

No, I know its not, but all the pictures I could find of an RS500 didn't show it off very well! :P

do it but get a good one :D

i don't think a standard one would be that much quicker than a remapped vRS :)

true, but that wasn't what i was getting at :o cars like these are bought with the heart, rather than the head...i reckon it's better to buy one (if you can) and realise it's not your thing than to always wonder what it might have been.

i want a lancia delta, and will get one when/if i can afford one

yes they are...... a lot of people underestimate just how fast those old 'rattle boxes' are

so about the same power output with a little less weight(possibly) but higher transmission loses makes it a faster car?

bearing in mind i am talking about the 4x4 saph not an RS500 or something silly

but higher transmission loses makes it a faster car?

i hear loads of horror stories about transmission losses..... cant say that i've ever found it to be a problem before!!!!!

a standard 4x4 cossie will eat a chipped octy vrs for breakfast

Really? I reckon the Subaru Impreza would eat a Cossie for breakfast, so it can't be that far ahead!

I wouldn't have one as an only car. A Sierra isn't far removed from a 1970s Cortina and even felt old-fashioned compared to the Mk3 Cavalier.

looking purely at the numbers, I can't see a standard 4x4 Saph eating a remapped vRS for breakfast (as much as I'd like it to :D) the figures on the rsownersclub are 224bhp & 214lb/ft with 6.6s 0-60.

but having said that, how many standard cossies are there around these days?
