Octavia 4x4 running costs ?

:) Thinking of buying the "Scout" but what are the 4x4 running costs, is the Haldex clutch reliable and cheap to change, whats the price of servicing,price of a new clutch,and can you have it MOT at a normal garage, as it could be the Scout or a KIA Serento 4x4 (whould have to look into running costs etc) anybody with any info ? cheers-Stuart.:thumbup:

Owned several Octavias butnot the 4x4.

Please do yourself a favour and steer clear of the Kia. We had one andit was a wreck. Pricey servicing, cheap and nasty feeling and we lost LOADS of money in depreciation.

I dont understand how they've done so well as they are absolutely abismal cars.

Skodas have a good quality feel and excellent reliability with respectable residuals.

Not much help, more a word of caution

To answer your questions (I think :o)

1) I think the Haldex clutch will almost always outlive the car - I don't know anyone who has needed to change one yet (although one or two have changed the controller computer). The reason I qualify that statement with "I think" is that the new Octavia has a different controller which engages the Haldex more often so might cause more wear ... but I doubt it's significant. EDIT2: Don't look on the Haldex coupling as a consumable item much more than you would on the rear diff of the Kia.

2) It can be MOT'd anywhere. EDIT1: although point out to the MOT station that it's a 4x4 so they know - some don't have the rolling road kit so need to use a **** meter.

3) Servicing is barely different, IIRC at 40k miles it needs a change of Haldex oil which costs around £40 extra.

Get the Scout! (and then bring it darn sarf and show it off to me :))

I have the Mk1 4x4 1.8T which I have steadily tuned more & more, its now running 350 bhp, the std was 150. To date I have worn out the std clutches & now run a severly upgraded one, Ive also stripped 3rd gear & now run the Audi TT box. The cars done 3 Cannonball Runs & one Furball, that alone totals 12000 flat out miles + numerous track days. The haldex has never given a problem & taken all I can throw at it so I guess no need to worry about that. In the unlikely event that one fails there are bound to be good secondhand bits around if the price is astronomical.

As for servicing costs the dealer is probably the best person to advise you but I would guess apart from a couple of items like rear diff oil changes it should be the same

:thumbup: Thanks for that lads, I already run an Octavia tdi 110bhp Diesel and its tows great apart from wet grass etc, the wife has the Fabia pd 100bhp diesel and it goes like sh#t off a shovel so the 2 ltr engine with a 4x4 grip should perform well, anybody at the dealers know what the servicing cost, cambelt change, clutch change prices are ? and of course the car price ? :eek:

I/m fairly sure you have to keep the tyre wear between the front and back axles within certain limits. This is to stop the haldex reacting to the different circumferences of the tyres.

The way the system works, I would assume that tyre wear would still be greater at the front than at the rear.:)

go for it, excellent. nowt has gone wrong with my 4x4 system and i abuse it :)

we've run a new pd105 4x4 for a year now and it's very good. I did consider a kia but the oct was 5k cheaper and better on juice (high40s). We may have to get rid of it in the new year due to needing a seven seater which is the only downside

get a trailor :D
